Make sure you check the clearance before you kick it. I put a scrape in one of my bikes because the kicker was too deep on the post.

I'm happy you all like it, even the Harley riders have been pulling up to me at the lights and at my house, to tell me it was lookin good. but anybody with a hacksaw and alot of xtra time could build that bike. I'd be happy to let you know how I did the fender. Or any of it. The gauges and signals wires were the hardest part. They are 79special gauges on a 78 standard. Or maybe the motor paint prep. Anyway it was just alot of time.

Don't underestimate your talent that went with the time. If all it took was a hacksaw and a lot of extra time, I'd be a 'Rembrandt' of custom bikes, cars, bicycles, li'l red wagons, etc. Even as the old saying goes, "where there's a will, there's a way", I've got all the will in the world but, there still ain't no way .

So, XS11lvr, stand up and take a bow for a job 'well done' ! The same goes for all you other talented people who have, can, are in the process of and, will, produce "equal" 'works of art'. Whether it be a restoration or transformation, it takes talent and, if you've got it... acknowledge it. You deserve it... just don't be arrogant about it.

                      Just my .02 cents worth...
                      change please !

                          motor paint prep

I would be most interested in the motor-paint and prep.Im torn between that great blacked out look, and the tried and true silver factory look.

I'll tell you how i did it, it's holding on just fine. The motor was pretty clean to start out. I had just the motor and the frame, so I didn't have alot in the way. I gathered up all the wires and things I didn't want painted and tucked them into plastic bags. I went to the hardwhare store and picked up rubber plugs for the intake and exhaust holes in the motor and plugged off the other two vent holes. The I degreased the motor 3 times. After that I ruffed up the entire motor with a wire brush, it took forever. Cleaned it again, maybe twice. Then masked off all the parts I wanted to keep silver. I painted the motor with ceramic 2000 degree heat paint. After it sat for a week I sanded all the edges on the fins back to silver. The paint is not pulling up at all, but gas will mess it up. I always covered the painted part when working with the carbs, and the petcocks always go to the off setting when I'm not running the bike. I've been running the motor since May and have put about 600 miles on the bike in the last few weeks. So far, so good. ...Wet fine steel wool worked good to take the old yellow clearcoat off the side cases, and Mothers mag polish brings them back to a chromelike shine. I used a clean soft rag for polishing, but I have been told the little mother's power ball works for the half assed polisher. When they look like chrome, I'm told you should clear coat them again, I HAVE NOT ON ANY OF MY BIKES. I don't ride the clean ones in the rain, and they stay nice, I wash them and dry them when they get covered in bugs. Here in the Pa mountains there are alot of bugs. Rain...not so much, the last few summers have been drrrrry.
I'm no paint guy, or no it all, or $$bags. That's what worked for me, without ripping everything apart and getting it heat coated.
You know what they say about free advice.
                            GW
Here is the only pic I could find of the build. It was about half way. The pink bike in the back is the one I ride in the rain, lol
