  • Sneaky Apple Tactics!

    Hey folks,

I use PC's, but run iTunes and iPod software....mostly because SWMBO has one! But I have sampled songs from some of the other music services like Windows Media, as well as our local classic rock station's service, but have found the iTunes mp4 versions much better quality than the others, rarely any flanging effects, etc.!

Well, today, got a pop up from Apple for a Software Update, clicked accept, then it installed and then ran an Update program, and then showed 2 programs it wanted to update and had both pre-checked for selection, one being the iTunes software...okay, but the other was something called SAFARI? When I highlighted the iTunes one, it had a paragraph below it that described what iTunes was, but when I highlighted the SAFARI one, it didn't say anything???

I checked my list of folders in my program files and couldn't find anything with that name. SO...then I searched the web and found out that it was Apple's version of Internet Explorer, a web browser.

But what I don't like is that they(Apple) just automatically selected that program to be installed as an "UPDATE" when it was never installed to begin with! I will still use iTunes, but just didn't like the tactics. I've seen this same style of tactics in other updates where they AUTOMATICALLY select to install a friggin' TOOLBAR as part of their updates...I DE-Select them as well...I always use the CUSTOM install option to review ALL the choices so that I can AVOID these annoying toolbars, etc., I'm just a bit disappointed in Apple doing the same thing!!

See what happens when Bill Gates retires?

If Bill was still at the helm of Microsoft, the boys at Apple would never try that stunt because they knew Bill would toast 'em.

Safari's been a part of Apple for a long time. They just recently began that injection system, and it IS dubious, to say the least. Safari isn't even that good of a browser to be shoving it in people's faces. Im more of a Firefox user, myself. Like the integration and add-ons that make it unique to the user. smoother than IE and less power-consuming, too.

Apple seems to be doing a LOT to really F*** with Microsoft these days, from those tv commercials with the two guys to the injected software downloads...seems to me they become more LIKE Microsoft every day. And....isn't that what used to advertise would NEVER happen???

I suspect it is linked with Apple's new MobileMe service. I'm not sure I like it. Being a .Mac user, I was converted to MobileMe automatically. The transition has/is not going well.

From the PC side, Apple recommends only FireFox 2.0 and newer, or Safari, Apple's own browser. (I have been using Safari on my Mac for quite a while and like it.) Quite a slap at Microsoft.

However, FireFox is not fully functional with the new MobileMe software. Fore example, there is a Gallery function in MobileMe, but I can't get FireFox 3.0 to upload any photos to it. I have a service cal into Apple to see if it is a FireFox issue of a problem on Apple's side.

Anyway, you can remove Safari through the Add/Remove programs control panel on your PC. I installed, but didn't care for, the PC version of Safari, so uninstalled it and went to FireFox.

I will be converting my web pages of rally photos to the Gallery format. have the '07 Olympia rally there now, URL is http://gallery.me.com/jerryfields

Will post a note when I have the rest converted. If you visit the Gallery, try the Mosaic option (Button at lower left part of the screen) which I like the best.

"If Bill was still at the helm of Microsoft..."

So far as I know he still is, not only that but he also owns a fair chunk of Apple.

He is propping up Apple so that they don't declare MS a monopoly and break it up.

Just some trivia, Leopard, Apple's version of Windows is having many of the same problems Windows had 2 generations ago.

Also, the suite of applications that made Mac famous... were MS programs!

So if you bought an Apple to get away from Mickey Soft, your deluded!

The Lisa, forerunner of the Mac, was all 'stolen' technology, so to speak, borrowed, w/o permission, from Xerox.
