Log splitter question!!

seen it
Hey,,,,,believe it or not I saw this thing over 20 years ago when I lived back East, in Ohio. A guy had one hooked on an old truck and he would throw the wood at it. The screw would take the short ones and they would just spin. The long logs worked ok, but with the torque created when the log locked onto the ground it probably would eventually bend your axle. I wouldnt recommend it. The guys axle was wobbly and probably from the use of this thing. Rent or buy a good splitter and you'll save money. Good luck, Mikemike

These have been around for a long time. Basically it is a threaded cone with an adapter for your wheel's bolt pattern.
I ran one on an International Scout II for 2 seasons. (Note: Does not work with a limited-slip differential!)
These can be very dangerous. I had a couple chunks swing around and had to pull the emergency stop cord (included) to kill the engine. DO NOT EVER run The Stickler without this protection!
Basically, you set up the car with the splitter, then put the wood at about a 45 degree angle to the car, and press it against the tip of the splitter. As the splitter screws into the wood the piece splits. Trick is to feed the wood about 1/3rd way down the length of the wood, and make sure there is enough dirt under the wood to keep it from spinning with the splitter.
As you work a small pit developes where the wood sits on the ground. Take it from me, you have to keep an eye on this pit to make sure you don't displace to much dirt. This is what happened to me when my pieces spun; did not watch out for this enough, pit got to big, and wood spun on me. Helped the problem by getting a cement paving block and setting the wood on that.
Must say it worked better than I expected, I split around 12 cord of firewood with it. (It was my neighbor's and he let me borrow it.) However, I eventually built my own hydraulic activated unit out of used parts and pieces. Not only much safer, but did not take the car out of commission for splitting. Hydraulic unit had less bending, easier on the back, but was not much faster.
So yes, The Stickler works as advertised and you can split a lot of wood with it. Mind the safety precautions and the risk is manageable. Given a choice I would check splitter rental prices in your area, and if not exhorbitant, rent a spliter as needed. Some places have a hour meter on the splitter and charge only for actual running time. If you do some metal work a splitter is not that hard to build, but it does take time and will cost a few hundred dollars if you buy used parts and pieces.Jerry Fields
