Manhole covers

I remember hearing about some city that was preparing for a New Year's Celebration...think it was NYC, and to protect against Terrorism they WELDED the manhole covers down!

I would think a few well placed beads would be enough to keep them secure, and yet, a few seconds with a grinder would be enough to cut thru the beads for when they needed to actually open them for servicing and such? JAT?

Guy I worked with hit a manhole with no cover in an F-150 and the repair ran him about $600. Busted up the right side ball joints. truck was dead right there.

I was riding my Virago back from UW Whitewater after a long weekend visiting my buddy back in the day. I missed falling into a missing manhole cover by about 1/2". I rode over the outside metal rim. Scared my back into alertness.

"A nifty hazard here in Austin is they will dig up the road and then cover it with a 4x8 sheet of steel, or even two of them. Some of them will cover the whole lane. Add to that the 5-6 inch lip of asphalt" Those are called road plates and are used all over the country iun underground constuction. The lip should be about 5-6" wide, but no more than about 2 and a half inches tall. That assumes that the person setting them does it right I worry about crossing them in the rain with only rust for traction.
