ok there are 2 wires coming out of the solonoid. one red and one black. the red one goes to the positive terminal on the battery, where does the black one go? it isnt long enough to reach the negative terminal. is it ground?

OK,well look for a wire of the same colour coming out of the loom near to where the solenoid is. Connect them up and that should be it. Obviously a wire 8 or 9 inches long ain't gonna stretch to the starter button itself eh.

Starter button
The starter button just completes the ground causing the starter to run. If you touch that black wire to ground the starter should run.....You can't stay young forever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life...

Hold on.
There are FOUR wires off the solenoid.
Two small gauge, red/white and blue/white (could be blue/red). they plug into the wiring harness nearby the solenoid.
Two heavy gauge one red, one black. I think these are the wires that you are questioning?
If so, the red one, like you said goes to the positive side of the battery, the black one goes to the starter motor.
I have also seen solenoids with FIVE wires, an extra small gauge wire for the ballast bypass.
