Rear axle spacer

I have a 1979 XS1100SF, the rear caliper bracket has been rubbing against the brake disc and worn part of the bracket off.
I bought this bike used and cannot find a clear picture in the clymer manual.
When I straighten everything out,there is a about a 3/8 gap between the hub and the caliper bracket, can anyone help?

I accomplished much the same as Ken, mounting a Special rear wheel onto standard, except that I cut down the spacer instead of the frame. This solved an alignment issue as well as, I believe, gave me more space to hopefully avoid the tire-separation fun I had last month (read: MSF course real-world pop quiz) in the future.
