I would have to say no, because of the locations of the TCI box. The Standard has the TCI in the rear and the Special has the TCI in the front. The seat pan has indentations to fit over the TCI.
It won't fit unfortunately. I have a really nice 79 seat, and my 80 seat is all torn. It's the same situation.
Tried to get it to fit for about 1/2 hour...unless you cut out a section of the seat pan(good luck with that)the TCI is in the way and you won't get it to sit down right. Could also damage the housing of the TCI if you force it and try to snug up the seat bolts.
If you feel industrious, I suppose you could relocate the TCI to where it is on the 80, the seat would fit then. Me, I'll just have the 80 seat recovered-told HWMBO it would make a nice Xmas gift for me-for now it's duct tape.
If someone had been sitting on me for thirty years, I'd look all tore up too. Everyone will understand.
I hear ya LOL. My seat doesn't look bad, I would just like somthing more comfortable. 30 years ago the standard seat was fine - I wonder what happened...

I did it to mine. I had to switch the rear inner fender and the rear fender and relocated the TCI. The reason I done it was I liked the rear fender and grab bar that came on the 80-81 bikes instead of what was on it for the 78-79. All I can say is yes it can be done. That's why I call it "MUTT"
Good Luck!

I think it was $289.00 in 1998, that included the back rest cover, I wanted them to match, but I don't think they have gone up much, and you can see they wear well. That seat is 10 years old and just as comfortable as the day I got it, but I noticed the other day one of the seams is starting to give out, so this winter I send it back to have the front seat panel replaced. I think you can got to diamond seat.com for prices.

It only took about two weeks, you don't have to send your pan, they make their own out of fiberglass, that lets them flex and makes them more comfortable then a stock seat pan would. And as a added bonus you can keep your stock seat, in case you want to trade it back or trade bikes,or sell it to recoupe some of the cost.

Wa407mpp, can I call you pp for short? The 78E I bought this spring has what looks like the same seat on it. My seat has Yamaha written acrossed the back. Does yours have the name too?? My Sissy bar/rack looks the same too. Does your's have a small pouch on the back of the vertical cushion?
