I wonder if it will stay on the rim during a flat long enough to stop the bike...

        Rubbing 130/90-16 Help please!

I have a few XS11s; a couple have 130 tyres, they have about 1/4" clearance to the shaft housing. The SG with the 140 has a couple of mm, and others have reported that raised lettering is enough to make that size rub. My swing-am chopper has a 150, and I had to space the wheel away from the bevel to stop it rubbing on the arm.

The hardtail has a 200/15 which I tried on a narrow (3.25) rim, it was still almost 190mm wide. On a 6" rim it measures 204mm wide and on a 72rim it is just under 210mm wide.

For a 180 to clear the arm on a stock XS11, it must be a very odd shape??

I was so happy when I read your post I just dropped some serious coin on a avon 103/90-16 wide white wall tire and it rubs on the swing arm. I was wondering if there was a way to space the final drive and it sounds like you've done it! How did you did oh guru of the xs? Seriously I hope that you or somebody can help me out, my bobber project is on hold. So please just tell me what I need and how I've got to do it. I really can't explain how exited I am to think that it's possible.
        Thank you so much,

There is a way to gain 1/8" or so of clearance on the left side of the swing arm. Washers can be put in between the clutch hub (star drive) and the cush drive. This will move the wheel over to the right. Then you adjust your swing arm at the pivot points over to the left 1/8" to put the rear wheel back on track. I've never done this but I know it has been done before successfully.

Awesome! I'm going to look into that, really all I need is about a 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch, I will have to look into it. With any luck somebody has made photo guide or idiot version of exactly how to do it.
            Thank you again everybody!

honestly, why bother. What does the size of your back tire matter? Does it handle better? go faster? stop quicker? Or is it a Harley envy thing????

XS11Lover, I gotta go with you on this one. My 11 has yet to break the back tire lose, and I can hit it dang hard on first gear. It just pulls me up to speed like a bat out of H#!!.

Only reason I know for throwing more rubber in back is more traction. Otherwise, its just more weight you have to turn and use HP you could be using to go faster. JMHO

I just need to know how to shim the final drive because my stock sized 130/90-16 is rubbing my swing arm. I know that somebody has a easy fix to the prob I just need to know how and what it takes. If I wanted easy project I would have definitely gotten a Harley. I just bought new tires and now that they are mounted on the rim I cant return them, so I am hoping for a cheap fix to get to ol girl on the road.

                      Hey XS11lover and DGXser,

This new fellow actually read the STICKY and searched first, and then replied to an existing thread instead of creating a NEW ONE! THANKYOU Tbishop!!

It's just his bad luck that the Thread TOPIC was putting a 180 tire on. He ONLY GOT and put on a STOCK sized 130/90-16, which theoretically should have fit, but his is rubbing!? Regrettably, this goes to show that different brands have different sizings and profiles even though it's listed to be within the stock sizing!

I've done the spacing with the washers. You have to use a set/pair of sockets to remove the bolts that secure the wheel clutch hub to the rim. They are going to be a little tough due to torque and years of corrosion, heat, etc.! About 2mm thick washers is about all you can use. That's only about a 1/12". There are 2 O-rings between the star hub and the rim, and I was afraid that if I used too thick of washers, that it would leave too much of a gap exposing the inner sections to contaminants, dust/water etc.!

Another thing you could try is heating up the depression in the drive shaft housing and take a hammer and beat it a little thinner/more compressed towards the drive shaft, but that could also cause the shaft housing to bend too much not allowing the final drive to bolt back up properly!

                      Good Luck. T.C.

Rear tire rubbing on your swing Arm?

Well because of all the great advice found in these threads, and a little reading between the lines, here is the solution I came up with. If your rear tire is rubbing the swing arm. There's a pretty easy mod that can be found here on my Xs1100 bobber page. I figured that a picture is worth a thousand words so if your thinking of fixing that rubbing problem check it out. It eliminates having to use the washers to shim out the final drive, but I heard that works too, so pick you battle. I'm not saying one is better then the other this is just the one I chose.
