180 rear on a 130 rim...

Just a note for those who DONT know...a 180 tire WILL fit on a 130 rim with some work. Of course, if it's a Dunlop like mine, the tread will cover the sides and make it look like a snow tire. WHICH, by the way, is what I've been telling the locals here in GA it is. LOL...they see Im from NY and they BELIEVE it!! I had to insert a tube into mine, but it seated with some convincing and is wearing AWESOME. So, if you get into a pinch, a 180 wide on a 130 rim is doable, with clearance issues not being an issue.

Do you know if there is a significant change in total wheel and tire diameter???? What I am looking for is a slight lowering of the rear end ratio.

The quick reply to that is the 750-850 final drive swap. 2.9:1 vs 3.3:1. That will lower your engine RPM by 500 at most speeds.

How is it that you aren't shredding the sidewalls by rubbing on the swingarm?

It doesnt rub. That was my main concern as well. If I had my camera here I could get a pic for you. I'll work on that. There is about 1/4 inch of clearance at best on the shaft tube, and PLENTY on the other side. No swingarm issues.

I loaded the thing with over 400lbs of stuff to come to GA, and it never squatted, buckled, rubbed, or heated up. Mind you, I bought the tire out of desperation, not because I wanted to. But I'll run it till its bald.

It doesnt exactly look pretty, but on my Rat Rod, one really doesnt notice. It seems to have improved my mileage as well. I went from 140 miles on a tank to about 150 riding locally. Can't beat that with a stick. I'll let ya know how many miles I get on it before I have to change it out.

Something is not right. Are you sure it's a 180? My 140 almost rubs! My dad has a 180 and there's NO WAY that would fit my bike.

It is because of the narrow rim. I wonder what it has done to the wheel height. I would bet it is a bit taller that a proper sized tire.

Yea I would be suprised if I can stick a piece of paper between my 140 and the shaft.

The rim keeps the tire from getting wider and rubbing. But it does change the diameter, and the rim can sway, or travel side to side with in the middle of the tire around curves and especially quick maneuvers. I would not go carving the mountains with that tire rim combo.

Hi Guys,

I have a few XS11s; a couple have 130 tyres, they have about 1/4" clearance to the shaft housing. The SG with the 140 has a couple of mm, and others have reported that raised lettering is enough to make that size rub. My swing-am chopper has a 150, and I had to space the wheel away from the bevel to stop it rubbing on the arm.

The hardtail has a 200/15 which I tried on a narrow (3.25) rim, it was still almost 190mm wide. On a 6" rim it measures 204mm wide and on a 72rim it is just under 210mm wide.

For a 180 to clear the arm on a stock XS11, it must be a very odd shape??

You'll have to allow me the chance to post pics ok? It's REALLY a 180. Was bought by this dude for his crotch rocket and he didnt like it. $160 tire I bought for $65. It seated on my 130 rim, which, as was mentioned a few posts back, made the sides suck in. The tread wraps around to the sides and looks like sidewall.

I have noticed some handling issues such as minor sway in a hot curve, but nothing I would consider dangerous with sensible riding. The overall diameter of the tire has changed but I couldnt tell you by how much. As soon as I have access to a cam I will take lots of pics and post them for you all. If some locals in GA want to check it out in person, I would have to say it'll cost you some riding time, since I don't know the roads here yet but would LOVE some fine weekend cruising. Anyone wanting to race can just keep on going. I'll catch up when you stop for gas...heh heh.

It's perfectly safe. As long as ya ride with half a brain. I slow into curves and roll on out of them, she handles great. And now, thanks to member mfarrington, I have a new used recovered with wal mart vinyl fabric 78 special seat on the ol girl. It fells so much better and when im relaxed sitting back into it, I dont feel as much movement in the sidewall. there cant be much flex, it hasnt rubbed on the shaft housing yet.
