  • Laconia day

Today was my first ever trip to a 'Bike Week'. HWMBO actually-finally-took the day off with me and we rode up on the HD Road King-it is a beautiful bike. I love it, but not as much as my XS. It's just not the same...
It's a decent ride on back country roads from where we live. Since my bike is still with Ed-got the last piece of the puzzle this week(Thanks Andreas!!)I rode all the way up trying to look over John's shoulder so I could feel like I was on my own bike. John has a Badlander seat. My backside is usually numb within 10 minutes. By the time I'm 40 minutes into the ride, I have shooting pains going down both legs. Luckily he has mercy on me and takes a break every hour so I can have the blood return to my feet. All I could think about was my big cushy seat on my XS and how I wouldn't be suffering right now if I had MY bike.
The place was really quiet(according to John). I was surprised. I thought there would be more people. We arrived around 11, got a parking space first try, and proceeded to walk around and check things out.
Lots of vendors-but they all had basically the same things. There really wasn't anything unique. I had to really search to find a t-shirt(the one thing I wanted)that didn't have rhinestones on it; wasn't black and orange; or one that wasn't completely in bad taste. I mean really...the torn-look? ICK!
They had the 'wasp' bike contingent there. The price tags were anywhere from 25K to 65K. Are you kidding me?! The first time they hit a bump with one of those ridiculous creations, it will probably break in two, that's if they can actually turn the thing to get it out of it's parking spot. I'm sorry, but that's just silly!
The people...Do I dare comment on that?? Most were relatively tame. We did see the occasional ridiculously attired bleach blonde acting aloof while her outfit screamed 'pay attention to me!! I have to be noticed!!' And of course there were the muscle bound meatheads that are the masculine equivalent of the previously mentioned blonde.
The highlight of the day, and the main reason for this post was my spotting 3 XS's-one 850, 2 11's-all specials. I kept looking for them! Sure, there were some Honda's, Suzuki's, and Yamaha's(XJ, Virago). To his credit, John pointed out one of them to me. He was looking for them too, so that was nice.
After being awash in a sea of chrome all day today-I can't wait to drop off the parts to the mechanic. I couldn't find one bike that I would rather have than my XS. I couldn't find one paint job, one chrome accessory, one 'set-up' that I would trade for what I have. There were some amazing machines there, ones that define the phrase 'money is no object'. None of them turned my head and as I sit here with the picture of the Witch on the desk next to the picture of my daughter in front of me, none of my plans for the bike have changed. I think that's cool.
As far as 'Bike Week' goes...after all these years of not going, I really wasn't missing anything.

That's awesome - that you still ove the XS after seeing everything else. You'll definitly be at home here!
How does John feel about the impending XS being on the road? Is he a little miffed that he's going to be left behind?

My first time there was the year after the riot on Weirs Beach. (A newly married couple were burned to death when their car was overturned with them in it.) That first year every second vehicle seemed to be National Guard trucks full of troops in full riot gear. Man it was sure exciting for a kid from a small town in Southern Canada. It seemed to be a lot of outlaw gangs near the track each with their own mountain of beer cans. I guess things have changed a bit since then. I haven't been since the late 60's or very early seventies. I still have some pics from back then. Reading your report of it brought back some old memories.

Well I have never been to a big bike rally or anything like that since there are not many down around New Orleans (except Crusin the Coast near Biloxi, Miss) but I do know how you feel. I have been to several of the Wednesday night gathering places where everyone on 2 wheels meet. Dont get me wrong, all of the machines are truly beautiful. Some are truly engineering masterpieces and others are pure creations of art. But, when I pull into the driveway and see my lean, mean, XS machine on the side stand under the carport, gold microflake black paint glistening in the afternoon sun and loads of bright polished aluminum, I realize I own something SPECIAL (no pun intended).

          Thanks guys.
It was fun, don't get me wrong. It's always entertaining to people watch. It would've been better if we were staying over. I would've liked to have seen it all after dark-John says that's when the crazies come out.
I think he'll be glad when my bike is on the road-after the first few rides anyway. He's very protective of me and I know he'll be watching me in the rearview, more than he's watching the road in front of him, until he's satisfied with my operating skills. Once I'm comfortable though he'd better watch out! I'll outlast him too-he confessed his butt was numb after the ride last night. I can't wait to do a ride like that with my cushiony seat(I even cut it down about 2", and it's still like a pilow!)Aahhhh! Happy cheeks!!
John's good. He's not the typical 'HD type' anyway. He thinks that whatever you like is good enough. He is the one who wanted me to buy a Suzuki GS1000-he owned one as a kid, just didn't fit on it right. Went to HD and never went back. He's been a big help to me with the XS too. If I'm content, so is he. Hopefully, one of these days some of you will meet him at a rally-you'll see what I mean.
He said that it used to be way more fun-better group of people, fewer rules, fewer problems. He didn't even really want to go, but took me to humor me. I think he'll have more fun next year. I'll be on my own bike(Woo-hoo!), we can cruise more, and we'll plan to stay over with some of our friends.
We'll see if anyone else from the site reports in from over the weekend.

Sounds like you had a good time...

and you're right... It's going to be even better when you're on your own bike...
(which sounds like it might be back to you pretty soon too... VERY cool)

I've never been to a large meet... I'm just not into the "large crowd" thing... but would like to attend one some day to see what it's like... The smaller XS rallies are really cool because you get to meet people you know you have something in common with...

ANYway... thanks for the report! It will be interesting to see if anyone from the site belonged to those bikes you saw...

I'll pass on the large crowds as well.

I went to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Brunswick, GA back in '89 for my job with Customs. We had a class on biker gangs and were shown seized home movies confiscated from the Outlaws. Some pretty sick stuff that would make some loose their lunch. Hanging out around those types...no thanks.

The '81' Group(Hells Angels)had a tent...Ridiculous! One of the t-shirts they had for sale said 'Shoot informants, not drugs'. What a bunch of morons! I walked by the booth and had to stifle a laugh. John and I looked at each other and both went 'Oh, Brother!'
Luckily, most of the people up there are not from that group. Just regular people up to see the spectacle. Everyone was very nice actually. The walkways were crowded and if you got crossed up with someone somehow they immediately turned and said, 'Sorry' or 'excuse me'. Everyone was very pleasant really.
