  • Radiation Effects Engineer?

So that's the title of the job I'm now looking for. I'm still on the payroll, but have no badge, and am NOT wanted on the campus. Company is going through it's FIRST EVER Major restructure, and I was caught in it.
Let me know if anyone needs somebody to play with Neutrons or protons in a beam....

An unplanned extended vacation just before riding season?

Kind of bittersweet... best of luck

hey! What location are you looking for? anything in particular? Quite a bit of stuff around here (I believe) but Texas in summer isn't nearly as pleasant as NoCal...

I'm going to try and stay local, as I DO like the OCEAN, not a Sea. I am "on the books" until August, so I DO have a little "play time".

        not commuting distance

Land-locked, but the LHC is going thru testing now.
Not exactly local either but should be under 6000 miles from home...

Ray, what exactly does a "radiation effects engineer" do. I play with radiation in my work, but I think on a different scale and such. I use predominately X-Rays in my job, but the occasional radio active isotope is not out of the question. My company does non - contact thickness measurement systems. we work mostly in the steel industry, but aluminum and ceramics are also part of our scope. typically, our gauge sits in the mill while the steel is rolled and gives thickness feedback to the mills automatic gauge control allowing the mill to roll a pretty consistent and accurate product. I find it to be interesting, most folks find the idea of playing with high voltage and radiation to be kind of scary. I wonder why? anyway, I was just curious, hope you find a new office to call your own soon. have a nice day and ride safe

Can you build me a "DEATH RAY"?

(Doesn't have to be hand held... Something that I could mount on the roof would be cool.)

I suppose it could be done, but it might take a little longer to work than you'd like. I can with the right X-Ray tube generate several hundred millirems per hour, but you would have to follow the object of your ire around for some time before it would reach the desired effect..... the"death ray might also ruin your afternoon without the proper shielding. but hey, I'm game to have a bash at it. what's the worst that could happen giggle snicker giggle

                  MY sympathies

                  Hi Ray,
been there, done that, took the golden handshake. Good side, didn't move to Toronto. Bad side, got stuck in Saskatoon.
Typically what will happen is that your employer will downsize until nobody productive is left on payroll, just a bunch of beancounters locked into a sodomy circle.

For the first time ever in my life it may happen to me. I was a soldier which I retired from by choice (23yrs 292days), then a workshop supervisor for two years and left by choice, but now work for an oil patch company that is drawing down in my area and concentrating elsewhere - boss thinks that his and my jobs will be safe but who knows.
A new experience for me and a pretty unpleasant feeling - the uncertainty of it.

                        Diver Ray,

I know that Lawerence Livermore is currently in a down cycle, but I'd start applying at any of the National Labs. You might miss the ocean, ie, New Mexico, or here in Texas, but it does keep you out of the trash collecting sites. I'd imagine Savana River would also need your expertise if they get the pit development site.

                        Best of luck

I do Mostly research on microelectronic parts. IE Chips. I may have a lead on a new job, but as I will still get a paycheck for the next two months, I'm not in a big hurry.
I plan on using this time to try and work on the winter project, after daily ride is back on the road. I've been doing a 100K mile service on him, and have about two more days of work to go. This HAS been the best "rif" I've been involved in. The package is MUCH better than the last time.

Hey DiverRay! Best of luck. No bad dreams I hope (like sleeping in your truck in someones parking lot)?
Could use a "beam" to aim at someone else's ride (cage), and bring it down!...like kill the spark? What do they call it..a some kinda' magnetic pulse? Oh, and maybe a device to steal electricity from overhead power lines...they lose so much power any way...Ha. Ha. Seriously, Seattle/Everett Wa. area still hiring, I hear. Keep in touch.

                              Geno,
I have family up in that area, so If SHMBO would move, I'd be up there in a heartbeat! I am trying a few leads locally first, though. But I DO NOT plan on "looking" until AFTER my Hawaii trip.
                              Diving comes BEFORE the job!!
