Just back from the Bob Jones Memorial run

the first tank of gas was through Dallas rush (?) hour traffic and some highway... I got 45 mpg (WooHoo!)... the 2nd tank was all highway and I got 42 mpg... Then we met up with the south Texas gang and for some odd reason, my mpg went to 35 - 37... I did have one tank of 33... but there were some slight variations to my speed on that one... ahem...

The only thing that isn't stock (from some type of XS) is my exhaust... I'm running a MAC 4 - 2 system (but not for long)...

Last time I checked I was burnin about 35 to the gallon or 11kilometers per litre........

the other day was up at the local strip mall, lots of bikes up and down the hang out area, when I cranked up the bike and took off for the highway a little faster than usual the sound comin outta that 4 into 1 supertrap exhaust sure made a lot of heads turn...the XS11 is lookin nice in chrome and black.

You wanna know what my milage was?

It Sucked! My first couple of tanks were my normal 30 at freeway speeds, But as we got to higher elevations it started running like crap. Saturday morning in Harrison, Ark, I checked the plugs and found #4 was black and sooty. Running rich. I swapped it out with # 3, and it smoothed out and ran good...for a while. After we started to climb out into the mountians, it started running bad again. I knew what it was...#4 running rich again and I was carrying a dead hole before we reached the highest point of the ride. I was trying to think of some way to lean it out when it occured to me...pull the cap of the vacuum nipple on #4 carb boot! It worked! By allowing more air into the cylinder, the fuel leaned out and it actually ran pretty good. These roads were some of the hilliest, twistiest roads I have even been on. You were constantly working the throttle and we all were riding pretty aggressively. Anyway, back to my milage...How about 3.2 gallons for 71 miles was the worst I had. On the return trip, as we got closer to home, and at lower elevations, the bike ran better, I even put the vacuum cap back on after we got on the freeway for the retun trip. At the last fuel stop in Ok, I was getting 30 again, and it was running like nothing had happend.

My rig is still getting the same highway mileage as my 3.8 litre V6 Buick. 27 miles per Imperial gallon (or 25mpg US.)
But I just fitted a Standard tank so I can now ride 94 miles before the red light comes on instead of 72. With the Special tank the red light shone 10 miles before having to switch to reserve and ran 10 more miles before running out completely.
With the Standard tank the red light shone at the same time as having to switch to reserve. The rig was still running on reserve 17 miles later when I pulled over to pour in my jerrycan of extra gas as I was chicken to run out of gas in down town traffic.

The Standard tank has a ONE GALLON reserve. That IS US gallon, but still should get you almost 25 miles!

so when I chickened out at 17 miles on reserve I could have gone another 8 miles.
Thanks for that information. A whole gallon in reserve is a good thing to have.
At least my extra 2 gallons are now safe in my gas tank rather than sitting in a jerrycan in my garage for someone to pour into the lawn mower.

I have a 40 mile round trip to work, mostly hiway/freeway.
So about a gallon per day.
My truck is pulling around 17.
Now if it will just quit raining for a while...............

What are you runnin' to get that good of mileage?!

On the trip for Bob Jones Memorial ride, I got 37 - 38 for most of the trip. I did have one tank that dropped down to 31.5. Not sure what caused that other than we were slowed down by a thunderstorm.

It's stock except for a 4 into 1, of unknown origins. Stock Airbox,
137.5 Mains on 91 octane. I should bump up a size, but it seems happy where it is. The PO had drilled the airbox, but I have those closed off until I get larger jets.
I average 40MPH on the commute, so it's not all WOT.

Even with the stock exhaust, I was pulling 40 per gallon, which was identical to my old XV920. When I gave it ( the Virago) to my brother, we rode all over Texas one weekend, and used almost exactly the same amount of gas.
My old job was more stop-n-go, and I was getting 35, but I don't punish it very often. I usually am running 3 to 5 KRPM, shifting around 4-4.5K.
Now, when I go out to play, I don't get nearly that good.

I do have a Vetter on it right now, but I don't know what the effect is vs nekkid. It's almost time to pull it off for the summer, so maybe I'll find out and report.

My baseline is 35 mpg, my fuel light doesn't work at the moment so I start looking for gas when the tripometer hits 100. I can go to about 120 before I have to hit the reserve. I've got 40 mpg out of the bike before, but right now I think my carbs are out of tune and I've been ridin' her a little hard lately. I haven't confirmed it yet, but I think my carbs are under jetted a bit so my lean mix might account for a slight increase in mileage. Oh yeah, I've always run 89 octane with no problems.

Kinnda dumb question I know but here goes: How do you get an accurate MPG reading? If I fill my 80SG to the top, shake it well , that and the fuel expansion will insure I have a lap full of gas. I have a new cap that seems to fit well.

My first tankful (not sure how old the gas was when I got the bike) did 122 miles on 4.5 gallons (I was on Reserve), about 27mpg, but mostly around town and some hiway.

Hopefully get better once I get it run thru.
It has new plugs, oil, filter, etc...will check next tank.

Only way to get accurate measure, is to fill it as close to the same spot every time.

I just do not take a chance if I have to beyond 85-90 miles before I fill. Last time got 2.1 gallons on 87 miles, about 41 MPG. Carbs cleaned this last winter but not synched. I am in Minnesota where it is raining but no storm and no flood.

i'm jealous... i only get 32 mpg!

but it has been jetted and has the kerker 4-1 on it. plus i am bad about hitting wot!!! it screams above 4000rpm's without the baffle in there!
