  • Best route accross Indiana?

I have to be in Dayton tomorrow evening for my cousin's wedding and was planning to take off from Chicago in the morning on the bike. I was hoping to find a route a bit more scenic than I65 and I70 and with it being Memorial Day weekend, I would like to avoid Indianapolis if possible. After looking at the map, I’m thinking US-30 or US-6 through Indiana to US-127. Cut down on US-127 to OH-49. Then, OH-49 into Dayton. Can any locals recommend a better, or more scenic, route? Is 30 or 6 a better choice through Indiana? The wedding is not until 5:30 and I plan on leaving 7ish, so I should have more than enough time for a pretty leisurely ride, and maybe even a bit of sight-seeing.
    Thanks,
    Dan

either one is good, I have used them both, when you get into fort wayne, head south on US27, pick up route 33 south of decatur. that will take you into some small town, wiltshire I think. if you continue following 33, you will run across 49 not to long after you get into Ohio. also, there is a motorcycle salvage yard right on 33 just inside Indiana. its called D & B motorcycle salvage and sales or something like that. on the off chance that you have a need for anything. been in there once. it's very organized. I didn't have the 11 at the time so I djavascript:smilie('')
big grinon't know what kind of XS stuff they might have, but sometimes its worth stopping in for a look. anyway, if you don't pick up 49 in wiltshire, you should find it in the next little berg over. It runs close to the indiana state line up that way. the easiest way to find 27 is probably to take I69 south till you get to the outer beltway I469 or something, head around till you get to 27. If I remember correctly, 33 follows 30 into fort wayne from the west and then jumps to 69 south then to the beltway then to 27. My directions have gotten rather conveluded but if you check a map before you take off, you'll see what I mean. have a nice day and ride safe .

Thanks for the tip about route 33. I didn't see that on the map this afternoon. If I have the time, I'd really like to stop off in that salvage yard. There's nothing that I really need right now, but there are always things that could be a bit nicer.

Everybody needs the location of at least one ore two salvage yards, especially when they ride "vintage" machines. I figured that since you were considering taking route 30, I'd point it out seeing as it's sort of on the way. Have a good trip, and definitely ride safe. Enjoy the wedding, and by the way, what part of Dayton is it in...just Idle curiosity as to which part of our fair metropolitan area you will be visiting. Be safe, good travels

The wedding is in Springfield and the reception is in Beavercreek. Thanks again for the info. Sometimes roads that look good on the map are miserable to drive. I've found that it is always a good idea to double check with those that know.

No Worries, Enjoy. I don't spend much time in Springfield anymore (no steel mills there). I have friends that live in Beavercreek, nice neighborhood. my ex used to live just outside Springfield in a little town called Donnelsville, but has run off to NE PA. Enjoy your cousins wedding. Ride safe
