  • Bummed, Oh well

I am replacing my mufflers. I read somewhere that the 1100 xs has 11/2 in pipes and ordered mufflers from JC Witney accordingly. They came and I discovered I needed 1 3/4. And being a dum ****, I used an expander on one of the mufflers to try to make it work. Now I am waiting for some fat boy Harley mufflers purchased through Ebay to arrive (1 3/4) Oh well, I need to learn to take nothing at face value.
I was a body man and painter in a previous life. I left body work in 1975. At that time acrilic laquer and enamal was the paint of choice. I can do a great job with ether. Any input reguarding the new paint systems would be appreciated. Is there a compelling reason to use the two part system over what I used in the past?
    Thanx

    Hi Deny,
To save a dollar you can get short little 1-1/2" to 1-3/4" exhaust pipe adapters from a muffler shop.
Those 2-part paints are tougher and more resistant to gas (especially, resistant to crappy modern gas) than the old lacquers and enamels were. Mix & use right away though or all too soon you'll have a pot of solid plastic. Other than that, paint is paint, it's like riding a bike, fizz on! Mind you, how's your eyesight? I find that using basecoat/clearcoat systems I can't see the clearcoat until it runs down in curtains and you know how that can spoil your whole day. That's why this amateur sticks to plain old primer and topcoat.
And wear a mask! Breathing in that stuff will rip your lungs out.

I agree with Fred about the modern two pack paint systems they are far superior to the materials used in the seventies. I used to work in a bodyshop doing classic car restoration we then used acrylic and cellulose paints the latter being very labour intensive .Just had my sidecar and bike parts repainted in a two pack clearcoat system very good finish. And yes dont forget that mask!

        Hey there DenyP,

Did you happen to see my recent thread "Painting Project Ends"?

I am/was an Xtreme painting novice, but I was able to get it to turn out decent with the 2 stage base/clear coat process! Like they said, the clear coat does run easily if you put it on too thick, and you'll want to apply a couple of thin layers of it ~5-10 minutes apart, it only lasts ~1.5 - 2.0 hours in the spray pot before it turns into a block of plastic!

The basecoats were the ones that seemed to have the noxious fumes, the clear coat was fine, but I used a full respirator with both anyways!
