Yep it's rare alright, the mileage is wrong too.
Did the MN Specials have the ring around the covers over the alternator and ignition in 81?

Yes (I'm pretty certain)... and they were black (not the ring... the covers)... I think this is an 80 since it has the spoke wheels and not the swirly wheels (unless they changed it out... like they did the covers... and the handlebars... and possibly the speedo... and who knows what else)

If you look at the posting, you can get a LOT of info. The bike has a SALVAGE title! the Speedometer is off a Special, NOT a MNS. Handle bars are also non MNS parts. If the frame and engine numbers match, you at least have a good start for an early MNS.

                      Early midnight !

According to the framenumber (4H3-000133): this bike is definitely an early made 1980 midnight special (XS1100LG),but some parts are from other specials. (Handlebar, speedo, etc.) The spokes are not curved on the first year midnight special,so this bike has the correct wheels.

I wonder if the wheels from a Virago would work? Those are swurly.

The Virago has a read DRUM brake. The front wheel may fit, but you would have to check the axle size.

Oh well DUH on my part... John just reminded me that we have a set of swirly wheels I was going to paint gold (See? that's what happens when you have too many irons in the fire)...

The big attraction for me with the 81 Midnight wheels as opposed to the 80 wheels... I like gold... and swirls...
At least if I paint the wheels I have... I can get them to match the other parts that I've already painted... I hope...

                              Oops... sorry... hijacking the thread...

Good luck on the auction Jim! You'll be the first in the group to own an 88 XS! If you win, please let us know if the parts interchange with any of our models..
