Thanks…..this site is a great source of information! I bought my 1980 xs1100 SG back in March of 1981. It’s still original and in great shape. She only has 12,000 mile on it, due to the limited riding season here in Michigan and primarily due to storing her in our basement for about ten years. I pulled her out of the basement last year and started to bring her out of her coma. New battery, oil, filters & plugs….she started but ran rough. What I went through from that point is a very long story that I could elaborate on if pressed, but on my first post, I just want you all to know how crucial this site was in her complete recovery. I had her out yesterday and got 43 mpg,(is that good?) it starts and runs like new. Thanks again and let me know how I can support this site.

I would like to send pictures, but I'm still severely challenged in this digital, techno, internet world. But I do have children that can help and a will to learn. I will post pictures in the future.

              Dogyear58,

My 1980 SG is completely original, like right out of the show room, except for new tires. Maybe I better run another tank of gas through her and check that mileage again, I may have made a mistake the first time.('')I'll have to get back to you on that.

                Hey there Kip,

Glad to see you finally got ON the site!

With that next tank of gas, you might want to throw in a few ounces of SEA FOAM while you're at it, can help to further clean out the passages, and keep it running smooth. I put some in every few tankfuls of Godzilla!

A few folks have posted being able to get 40+ mpg, but they are running a bit lean, have their float heights set fairly low, and are very easy on the throttle!

IT's used to clean out boat engines that sit a long time, but auto stores carry it also. If you can't find it, Berryman's carb cleaner will work also, but Sea Foam is great!

Hey, TC!! I get about 42 MPG every tank! I DO have the 750 final drive, but I also see triple digits on the speedo every day on the way in to work. With the "old" gas from the late 70's, I was getting 45 to 53 on my '78. The "new" gas is "cleaner", but I can only get about 38 to 42 with it. You can ask ELiberty just how "easy" we ride!

Thanks for the suggestion, but I picked up some SEA FOAM yesterday from Murray's Discount Auto Supply. I put four ounces in the tank and filled her with gas to the top, reset the trip odometer and am ready check my mileage again.

                              Seafoam

The REAL treatment is ride until reserve . Pour in a whole can of Seafoam . Ride a little more to mix it up and get it into the carbs . This can take 10-15 mins on idle so if you have a small reserve you may need a little more gas in the tank to start with . A short ride of 10 mins should do it . Park bike , leave overnight or as long as you can to let the Seafoam work . Next day - fill up with fresh gas . I can ride on the strong solution with no problem . It has even helped my bike run a little leaner and more pep.
                              * if your carbs are badly mucked up , the Seafoam can work so good that it may run worse after treatment especially if it has been synched with gummed carbs or tuned at a bike shop( rarely know enough about our bikes) .
*SO -- plan on a synch and a color-tune as soon as possible .
If bike runs great - ride into the sunset

P.S. Seafoam makes a great stabilizer for winter or storage as well
