  • Okay, I've lost it...

I went to look at a XS 11 tonight. I bought the damn thing!! I'm doomed!
It's gorgeous! Not a speck of dirt anywhere. I am going to part out the one I bought and keep this one. In Massachusetts, you must have a title to register the bike. The one I bought last fall has a clear title and we're going to get this one "blue stickered". Somehow, someway, I'm going to find out what causes the bike to turn over but not run and get it ready to go. It has 49K on it and someone lovingly cared for it up til the PO I bought it from. I will send pix hopefully tomorrow.
$400 and we brought it home. Vetter Windjammer fairing, everything is there, but it's not a 79 like the kid thought. It's an 80G-serial# 3H5, etc. Perfect! It will make the coolest Yamaha/cafe ever! Look at the time, I'm so excited, I can't sleep. I have to work in the morning-shame on me!
I am going to try to run it tomorrow. Change the gas;make sure everything is connected;and GO. I'll be asking soon, what do the "Guru's" think.
Even the "Old Man" was impressed with how well I did finding this. He said it was a score. Wow! He never thinks I do well, so I must've really found something. He's all HD, but before we left the bike, he made sure it was completely covered-rain tonite-how cute!! I'll keep you posted!

Speaking for the high and mighty...

The Gurus think you found a pretty sweet deal.
    You've got a runner... and a parts bike/ fixer-upper.
Your life couldn't get any better.
Change the gas and check or change the oil.
Petcocks and carb float needles can leak over time. Fuel gets into the engine.

      Congratulations,
Sounds like a very good find. One word of caution, don't get it too close to that HD. If you inadvertantly rev it up a little too much that thing will disappear like a dust bunny into a vacuum cleaner and it will take a couple of days to pick it out of your air cleaner!

If there are more than three bolts holding it on there, it is most likely a very important part!

My '81 was sold to me as a parts bike for my '80. I just can't get myself to use it that way. It runs and was in as good as condition as the '80 only it has that issue with 2nd gear.

Instead of stripping it down for parts, I've already had both seats restored and both tanks and battery covers are just about finished at the body shop.

I just can't let another XS1100SH fade off into history! Aren't they on some kind of protected species list?

I bought the damn thing!! I'm doomed!

First XS I got was an 80G.
Was able to get it running on my own but not running right until I found this forum.
Little while later decided to keep it (had forgot how much enjoyed riding).
Then started checking around to see how much trouble it was to find parts should I need some.
First found another 80 XS on creigslist...turned out to be a 80 MNS...got it for $100.00, then found a 79F...then found another 79F... after several more I ran out a space to store em.
Currently have a "spare" running 79SF stored in a friends garage because it won't fit in mine and any time I want to do something in my garage need to roll one or two out to the driveway.

One could say I became XSive

            One thing be cool.
My garage is mine now as it used to be "free storage" for a friend

Since the first one is so close to being a runner, I would hate to see it get canibalized for parts. Of course it's your choice, but by vast majority, I think we would all like to see another runner on the roads versus a few more parts on Ebay (Or elseware).

It would be more labor intensive, but these are obviously worth more as parts than a whole, but you might offer up the bike to someone who will get it back on the road??

Again, it's yours to do with as you wish, but just a thought.

                  gear oil

While you are at it check the middle gear case and the rear end for gear lube too. And do a quick walk around with some wrenches and check everything, Sometimes the PO's forget to tell the new owner they left something loose.

If it will fire, but quit when running, try the ballast resistor. You can bypass it for a test, just unplug the two red/white wires and plug them into each other. DO NOT try and run for a long time that way, as you WILL burn up the coils. The resistor is under the tank, on the left side of the bike.
Great find!! Now you have one for you, and one for the HD fan, as he will get tired of trying to keep up!!

I started another thread under Calling all Guru's in the XS discussion. I would appreciate any advice. Please check it out.
As for the nearly running one-the 79-it does run, but on closer inspection, it has serious problems, that's why I needed another bike for parts.
This 80 is SO good though, that now we're going to register IT and use the other one for spares of almost everything. I don't plan on ever getting rid of the bike-I did 6 months of research and trying bikes on before I decided what I wanted-when I get too old to hold the beast up, lucky me, they make a side car that fits it!

Would that be, perchance, the brown one in Milford that's been on Craigslist for the past six months? The one with "top end issues" but needed someone to "take it out of his yard?" I offered that guy $300 to clear his yard of it back in October when he had it listed for $600 OBO and he passed.

Anyway, nice find. If you're parting out your old standard and not needing the handlebars, would you see fit to part with it?

This one is black, however, it was in Milford, in a basement.
I think the kid doesn't know anything about this bike, to be honest. I can't really put any stock in what he told me about the bike. His brother came over while I was there and started talking about cafe style bikes-the real ones-Norton, Triumph, etc. I let him go on the tangent to keep the other one from realizing how excited I was about the XS. The one selling the bike looked at us like we were speaking Swahili. He had no clue what we were talking about. That's why I put out the call on the XS discussion page, now, there's knowledge about what is wrong with an XS!!
As far as my other one goes, I will be parting it out. You are more than welcome to come down and see what you would like off of it-we'll barter for it. I won't sell the parts off, even if I don't need them. I would rather give them away to another XSer, especially a local one that I can have as an ally. Send me a PM and we'll see what we can do.
