Are there any fundamental differences between these machines?
Or is it just cosmetic; ie seat, tank etc....

Tkat brace, new coils/wires/plugs, refurbed carbs (thanks 81 xsproject), recon'd top end, windshield (thanks dpotter58), resprayed tank and panels, 4-1 exhaust, sweet xs pod filters, in line fuel filters, progressive springs, thick hand grips, jumped headlight relay.
Basicaly the same bike ,just every thing is blacked out with gold trim parts are interchangable. I always liked the MS my cousin still has one. Oops you said standard... they are a little different the gauges and tank are diff even the brakes and front end but the powertrain is the same.

47 years riding and still learning, does that make me a slow learner?

There's even a bit more different IF you're talking about an 81MNS, because Yamaha started using some of the XJ's parts on it, like linked brakes and calipers, not to mention the other differences between standards and specials!

I'm currently working on SWMBO to let me take a flight and ride to buy it - I think it would be great fun and a good bike in to the bargain, but I've never done anything (of any size or importance) without her (often grudgingly) approval. Hence the reason we have what we have, left to my own devices I have little doubt as to the circumstances I'd now be in
I really want to be a two bike owner as well!!

That remark was an old inside joke on a comment I made some time back when we were talking about the XJ's vs. the XS11's!
SO...yes, he put on the swirly wheels on his machine, he liked them, and I was the one that poked a little fun at him a while back!

Did any of you ever see that 1100 Midnight Special that was on Ebay a few years ago? It supposedly had never left the crate, never been run. I think it was an '81.
If I remember correctly, the bids got up near $10 grand but the buyer didn't sell.

Main difference between the MNS and Standard is the MNS fuel tank holds less. Well, all Specials, not just the MNS. Plan to refuel mopre often with a Special tank. Standard = just over 5 gallons, Specials - about 3.5 - 3.75 gallons at best, less on both before you hit reserve.

Standard has the power and the ridability (im from yurp, lotsa curves, love to scare 600 plastic crowd),
MNS has the looks... damn. Make a MNS XJ and ill trade my standard for it.
XJ is prolly the best looking hi-tec (yep, even now) power cruiser imo. Lets face it... times of VF750 are over and you get an onboard computer with all the rest of the gizmos only on goldwings etc...
