Gel seat pads

Anyone ever put the gel pads in their seats? Not the type that goes on top but under the seat cover. If so, what type did you use and were did you get it?

I got the one from JCW that straps on top of the seat. With it on I sit an inch higher and it felt weird that way. I'm not sure of the comfort (guess I should try it). If it's comfy I might cut-out a section of the seat pad and install it under the cover.

I got an on the seat gel cushion for the wife. She thought it was a lot better than just seat for 600 mile rides.
That doesn't answer your question, but thought I'd throw it in if you are contemplating the on seat variety at all.

I bought one at J&P Cycles for my Max (the stock seat sucks). It didn’t have a cover or anything and still cost $70. It is made of what they call raw “SaddleGel”. I pulled the leather cover off my seat and removed what was left of the original clear plastic cover which was only about 1 mil thick. Then I cut down the original foam with a hack saw blade. The original foam was round at the top with all of the support right in the middle. Too narrow for my big butt. I cut the foam down a couple of inches so that the 12” wide gel pad would lay flat across most of it (about 10”). Toward the back of the seat I bowed the hack saw blade down in the middle so that it actually cut the center a little deeper than the sides. I don’t like setting right on my tailbone. Then I sandwiched the gel between two sheets of 4 mil plastic, position it on the seat and wrapped both the plastic sheets down around the edges of the seat pan. Put the original leather back on and it looks pretty good. You can see some of the wrinkles in the plastic through the leather if you look real close but it still looks good.

I put over 200 miles on during the first test ride yesterday and I felt great. I think I can triple that and still feel good. Had a sore butt after just 100 miles with the original seat.

J&P Cycles is close by so I went up and looked at the pad first. It really is sticky jell and I think it has to have some type of cover. They sell the gel with vinyl or synthetic sheep skin covers already on them (around $100), but if you’re going to cut into the foam you will have to replace the plastic. The original plastic on the Max wasn’t very thick and the wrinkles didn’t show through but it was in pieces after just 10 years. J&P’s web site is www.jpcycles.com. The Saddle Gel pads should be there. You could also do a search for “saddlegel”. J&P is not normally the cheapest place to buy things.

I have a bicycle jell pad UNDER the cover of "daily ride". Works GREAT on the seat now, with a white cover. When I had it under the stock BLACK cover, it would absorb the heat from the sun, and "burn my bum" ALL the way home!! That is a 45 minute ride!! I don't even want to think of what it would have been like going through Texas two years ago!!
The pad DOES make the long rides bearable.

I put a travelcade seat on my bike a couple of years ago. I emailed Travelcade Co. (BST Enterprises Inc.) and asked if they had an insert for my seat and this was their reply.

If you already have our seat on it, then the only way to get gel in it is to install it yourself, or have a local upholstery shop do it, or send the seat to us. You can buy the raw gel for installation, it's $55 (each seat, front or rear). If you want us to install gel, it's $125 for the front, and $200 for both seats.
