  • carb tuner in lalaland

the mechanic I got referred to is asking for $80 for carb synch, and knows nothing of the bike. It's YICS furthermore so I'd hate to haul it for nothing, pay for nothing...
I am up to build the special tool, in the meantime is anyone up for the job? I am in mid town LA, I could move around a bit as well.

Build the YICS tool, buy a sync tool, do it yourself, and you'll be way ahead on the $$ situation.

      synch gauge

Buying mercury sticks would probably be more accurate, but I'm a fan of the vacuum synch gauge. Easy to build, cheap, and it seemed to work pretty well. click--> Homemade Vacuum synch gauge But in any case, you can certainly do it yourself. Just my $0.02...

I agree it is easy to do yourself. Once you gain access to the adjustment screws all you need is the gauges and a screwdriver.

Some say do the sync at idle and others say do it at higher RPM but I do the routine at about 1300-1500 RPM. Make sure all else tuneup wise is in order first then sync #1 and #2 carbs with the adjuster between them and then do the same with #3 and #4. Then sync the pairs together using the center adjuster. Then adjust your idle speed screw to the desired idle RPM and you are done. Its easy

Don't forget the FAN for cooling!! I use a 20" "box" fan, about $15.00 new at target or wallyworld. The engine WILL overheat in about ten minutes without a fan.

I was actually looking at that set myself. The big thing is you will need to put all 4 gauges on a SINGLE carb, and set the needles to the same measurement so you KNOW they are working correctly. Should not be a big deal, just a few bits of PVC pipe and some glue.

I have those, work great. Like Diver said, hook them all to one carb to see if they all measure the same. You can take the lens off and turn the needle so they all do. I used "T's" to hook them all together. I glued some 1" foam rubber on the back so they stay put and rest on top of the bike frame above the coils.

                    balancer options

                    Hi Greg,
you can do one of these things:-
                    1) Pay someone $80
                    2) Buy mercury carb sticks
                    3) Buy vacuum gages
4)Buy those gages that look like mercury sticks but have solid metal rods instead.
5)Build your own water or oil filled 4-way manometer.
In each case you will need the YICS tool and that's a thing that I understand you must build for yourself anyway?
                    1) OK, you already said you don't trust the guy.
2), 3) or 4) You get a known product that comes with an instruction book. You will be spending less than the $80 the mechanic is asking and the tool will be yours to use until you drop it or (for 2) spill the mercury.
                    5) A water filled manometer has the potential to be 13 times as accurate as a mercury carb stick and an oil filled one 14 times but it's a horkin' great tall thing that you have to build yourself for perhaps $10 and work out how to use.
                    Your choice.

                      dope

I would build the vac synch from the thread post if I wasn't so manually impaired. Screw driver & wrench ok, the rest is way out of my league.
                      Twist and turn, drink, repeat...

Borrowed one and tried it last night. Seems to work very well. I could see a noticable difference in the gauge readings with minor turns of the carb adjusting screw. I plan on buying one for myself.
