  • Western NY Spring Fever

So here I am, with my XS in pieces in the back room, with a nifty collection of newly painted parts gathered all around the still unpainted frame, when my friend comes rumbling up on his Vmax. "Beautiful day out", he says, "You should be out riding!"

"Dude", I say to him. "It's 35 degrees out and there's still snow on the road." He grins and nods like one of those hicks from Deliverance. I half-expect to see drool ooze from his mouth any minute now.

Suffice it to say, we Western New Yorkers split riding time into two categories: Snowmobile and Motorcycle. When there isn't enough snow for the former, we break out the latter. Dodging snow patches and ice spots isn't new to us, we do it all summer. BUT, seeing him out with his '01 Vmax while my poor XS is still in parts on the floor of my tool shed depressed me to the point of suicidal thoughts. Luckily for me, they were about someone ELSE committing suicide, and therefore had no bearing on my actual actions.

Anyhoo...in lieu of photos, since SWMBO has misplaced my digital, I want to describe for you the transformation my Rat Rod has made...

So far, it now has a gloss black engine, thanks to HD engine paint, metallic Cobalt Blue tank and fenders with some AWESOME (IMO) ghost graphics that shine out nicely in the sunshine. The frame will be yellow as soon as I get more paint. It's the last thing I have to paint before reassembly. The carbs are yellow, the side covers on the engine are yellow, ignition cover is yellow, gear hub is yellow, seat is still somewhere in my Saint Bernard's digestive tract, rotors are Cobalt Blue with yellow inside all of the holes, and the rims are a nice Cobalt Blue with aluminum highlights where I've Dremelled the paint away. All in all, I think it should be a nice ride this summer. Pics to follow asap.

    SOOO LOOKING FORWARD TO SPRING!!!!!

    A name for your XS

    Hi Hammer,
so what's black, cobalt blue with ghost graphics, yellow, polished aluminum, chrome and (surely, now that your dog ate the seat) a custom cobalt & yellow 2 tone custom seat cover? It's Jacob, (who also had a coat of many colors)

        FOrgot the engine pic...

Right after I took this, I recoated the entire thing so it's one even coat. 2 rattle cans of engine black high temp paint put a nice gloss to it. Soon as I get the frame done, i'll be ready for reassembly.

          Quite the transformation!

Looks like quite the face-lift from when we rode at the NYS Fairgrounds thru to Skaneateles last fall. The colors sound pretty wild, but I picked out the fireman's symbol in your ghosted paint job.

Look forward to seeing more pics as it comes together.

Unfortunately, family duties keeping me from attending the Pocono rally, but I ordered a shirt!

I got an oil cooler rig to install, a noisy valve that likely needs a shim change, and a new set of carb rebuild kits to install, but just riding it for now as I try and figure out my wacky tach. Works fine out of the can but goes crazy (wild & fast needle swings) once reinstalled..no visible shorts or grounds. It's haunted!

          Keep us posted with pics!

            Nice paint

I love the FD logo going into the flame. You've really done alot of work to get it that far. Looks nice.
I'm glad I'm not the only one with a bike in pieces. Gives me hope.

              Well:

It's together, I've been riding it for a while now back and forth to work. Runs like a top, looks a little out of sorts, but the tank really stands out. Funny thing is, it's ALL spray paint! Rattle canned all the way man.

              Scott:

You're way right on looking way different than last year's ride. It's a shame we can't catch up before I head south on Memorial Day weekend. Georgia has called my name, and I'm moving there to attend Airframe and Powerplant Maintenance school. I plan to do a LOT of riding down there, but will have to work days and school nights until 11:30. Doesn't leave much in the way of R&R time. I'll have the laptop tho, so I can keep in touch.

                Latest pics

GA for School? When did that pop up? Also, did I see something about a wedding in the near future? Busy guy with SWMBO in the future!

Looks like you have different pipes as well and I'm curious about the 3 tail lamps. What's the deal there? Also, you've got to get some small in-line fuel filters to replace those big cans....breaks the visual look....

You won't be hard to pick out in a line up!!! Keep it between the lines!

                Keep in touch....

                  LOL....a lineup...

The cans are from my friend's Vmax. He bought an 81 and replaced the stock mufflers with Supertrapps, so he gave me his cans. They sound AWESOME!! I had to put about 15 solid hours of welding with both stick and wire...and LOTS of grinding to make em fit. A few dings here and there in the right spots with a 2lb sledge, and they fit right on. Center stand doesn't quite retract fully, but it's close enough for me.

The 3 tails are a temp fix so I could ride. The bottom 2 are LED. I had planned to use one for tail and one for brake, but there is no difference in intensity so it won't pass inspection that way. SO...I wired both for tail and tossed my old tail/brake under the rack just to keep it legal and have a working brake light. I also integrated it with the turn signals so the low filaments blink with my LED signals. Of course, the brake lights drown out the blinks, but it's still a neato quickie fix. Should fit right in if I get lost in the hills of TN, eh?

The GA school thing came up recently. We need a change of scenery, GA has ALWAYS been a draw for me, since my days as an OTR driver, so that's where I'm going. SWMBO thinks she's following, but I don't think she'll leave her girls behind. It gets complicated from there. Someday I'll relate it to you over a coffee. Suffice it to say, my older boys are moving with me, but my 17 yr old is coming back to NY to live with HIS mom so he can finish his senior year at Perry. Can't blame him there, he's been in Perry since kindergarten. Promised my 15 yr old lots of rides in the GA heat. He's looking forward to that. SWMBO and I have decided if she DOES indeed go with me, our 2 yr old redhead is going to be our southern belle. She's such a gift, that little girl.

The big fuel filters were cumbersome and a bother to keep in the right spot so the gas lines wouldn't kink. Replaced them with Briggs and Stratton lawnmower filters available at NAPA. The new ones work very well, have great flow, and don't make the lines kink. I have since gotten rid of the yellow and painted the covers blue with metallic overtones. They look nice. It's a LONG way from done, but it's gettin closer. I have yet to pick up the diamond plate aluminum for the sides. Perhaps after I settle in south of the Mason Dixon? I'm on my way, ya'll!!
