Meaning no disrespect to whoever Bob Jones is, but if you paid me $600 to clean you carbs, I would have at least cleaned the butterflys and put a little more attention towards the carb bodies. I would also have the float bowls off to show the inside for the auction. Im just being pissy this morning sorry.Live every day like no one else so later in life you can live like no one else.

Hi JD,
the average phone book has Joneses by the pageful and Bob Joneses by the column-inch but if the Bob Jones in the ad is THE Bob Jones, the recently deceased propriator of Merriam Cycles, be sure the carbs were done right even if you can't see their innards.Fred Hill, S'toon

Me thinks jdsmith just stepeth in it !! lol..
Do a search in here about him, or on the internet. Your statement in here about who he is, is just about the same as living in Chicago and saying, "Who was this Michael Jordan guy?" lol.
It would be more believable though if he had a reciept, and even that wouldn't mean it was for THAT set of carbs.

WOW .. anyone who would pay 600 to have carbs cleaned needs medical assistance. For that kind of cash you could buy a brand new set of smooth bores ???

I thought that too at first, but if all the jets are new and the slides were all replaced with new, that alone would be well over $400. So add in cleaning and assembly time, that's probably not unreasonable.
Not to belittle Bob in any way, but I think anyone who replaced everything in their carbs including O-rings and cleaned them well, anyone could have just as good of a setup. Bob probably didn't PERSONNALLY build them anyway if in fact they did come from his shop.

Bob Jones rest in XS Eleven Heaven
Well he isn't called the High Priest Of Temple Eleven for nothin' If you think his carbs are expensive you should see the prices he was asking and getting for his XS1100 SSR/2...a beautiful machine for a paltry $23k.But Bob did push the envelope on the best motorcycle that was ever built and pricey or not he has contributed single handedly a wealth of technical knowledge and achievements to the XS1100 and ofc the XJ1100...way beyond what Yamaha engineers envisioned...His hand rebuilt machines are a testament to the man and his love of the the XS/XJ1100...He will always be remembered with Reverance and esteem.1980 XS650G Special-Two

We used to charge $75.00 a Carb thus resulting in $300.00 on the bike. I've did the work for Merriam on and off for over 20 years. Nothing special about Merriam's carb work.
The best part is using the Ultrasonic carb cleaning system he purchased for about $3,000.00. This system works great.
If the carbs cost $600.00 they must of needed many high dollar parts such as diaphragms or OEM needle and seats and such.
Bob did charge a pretty penny for the work and sometimes they still leaked and had problems. 3rd times a charm sometimes....LOL
Anybody could do this themselves using this web site as a guide.
Ultrasonic is the way to go as it is water based. Made a believer out of me.
Anybody around the area of Kansas City who needs a carb sync. PM me, I do have some nice $300.00 gages just waiting to be used again."We are often so caught up in our destination that we forget to appreciate the journey." "
