  • Life expectancy on motor

Buying a 1978 11 with 40,000 miles, driven by an adult. Does anybody know top mileage on this model before any major engine repairs or rebuild would be required??

I am pushin 65k on my 80g. There are lotsa rigs here still running after 100k. Read the tech tips about what to look for in a used XS11 and it will give you some insight. You may or may not have the "2nd" gear problem.
    When a 10 isn't enough, get a 11. 80g Hardbagger

I would say that varies with riding style, operating conditions, quality of routine maintenance and tuneup. Also, the definition of "major". But, IMHO, if all that is being done correctly I see no reason why one of these motors should not give upwards of 80,000 miles or more before anything major would even be a consideration.

Firstly, allow me to welcome you to the forum. Good to see a fellow Michigander on here; especially a yooper. That truly is God's country up there. (I lived there for seven years and miss it)

As to the engine, that depends on how well it has been taken care of over its 30 year life. There are XS 11's out there with over 100,000 miles on them (yes, one hundred thousand.... not a typo). You take care of your machine, and it'll take care of you. Now the question becomes: How did the PO (previous owner(s?)) treat the bike?

No matter how you slice it, this is a great bike, and this forum is a nearly unlimited source of information, which will help you all the way.

              Synth oil

I ran it in all my bikes including my present one you just need to get Motorcycle specific. not automotive grade, iI run amsoil and have never had any clutch problems . I buy it by the case of 12 for 7 bucks a liter and run it 8000 miles between changes. It is the same colour coming out as when it was new.

I used to own one of the XS11's baby brothers. A 1982 XJ650RJ, or 650 Seca. I put on over 100,000 miles with no intenal engine, tranny, or clutch problems. The main thing is to do your oil and fliter changes. I see no reason that a properly cared for XS11 will not excede this. Of course if yu flog it to death it will last a much shorter time. By the way I only used 20-50 Castrol in it. Changed oil and filter right at 3000 miles. I did run an oil cooler.
