Locking device

Hey Folks,
What type of locking/security devices do you use to secure your rides when left unattended and vulnerable to theft? I mean, besides the factory fork lock.

I use a front rotor lock made by Bell which fits very snugly on my XS.
And since I don't have the benefits of a garage, mine lives in the carport, at night I chain it through the swingarm/driveshaft to the carpot colunm. BTW, I live in a good neighborhood, very few thefts. But how do you secure it when you leave it out while you're at work, a restaurant or bar, visiting friends?

Standing joke when I snowmobiled was that the best anti theft device was to put an Arctic Cat cover on your sled at nite and no one would steal it!

There's the urban legend about the fellow who wanted to "sell" his Honda Pacific Coast to his insurance company so he left it outside a biker bar overnight with the key in it. He went back the next morning and it was still there.
No matter how fancy a security device you have, there's no way* you can stop four burly fellows with a bolt cutter picking your bike up, putting it in a 1/2ton and driving away with it. The best you can do is hope your security measures will encourage thieves to pick an easier target.
* well, there's two ways. One that's legal is a hidden radio tracker so you have hopes of getting the bike back. The other that ain't is semtex & nails inside the gas tank and an automatic remote trigger so you at least have hopes of revenge.

I like the semtex & nails idea.

Reminds me of the anti-kidnapping system they're selling in S Afrika and in some So American countries.
Long story short - Armored propane tank in the trunk connected to lines with nozzles and igniters that run along the bottom of the rockerpanel. One push of the button and out come flames the length of the car and out laterally 15 to 20 feet..

Four burly guys will take whatever they want, but the truth is that most thefts are crimes of opportunity. So, if you make it just a little bit harder they may just look for an easier target.

What locks do is keep honest people honest. A thief can figure out how too get around most anti thieft device.

The best one I heard was the SA who got fed up after his 2nd BMW got stolen.

He left a bottle of whisky in the glovebox laced with cyanide. When his third BMW got stolen the police found it a few miles down the road with 5 dead black guys in it...!!!

Absolutely nothing.

If the sheer weight doesn't deter them, nothing will.

I've had one bike stolen, and the police had it back in less than 30 minutes....In fact, they found it before I knew it was missing....

I have never even bothered with theft insurance, on my bikes, and that has probably saved me $15,000 or more all by itself!

I can't even insure the XS for theft. They want a detailed appraisal before they'll even consider it. I am usually pretty conscious about where I park, like not leaving it in a unlit alley or beside Lincolns on blocks.

As was said before, if someone really wants it, they'll take it no matter what security device is on it. I like Fred's suggestion but the best idea, IMOH, is the tracking systems out there. At least you'll find out where it went and have a chance of getting it back in one piece.

I like C4 better than Semtex, but it's harder to get on the black market.

Departmet of Homeland Security tends to frown on the 2nd effective method though (LOL...I bet the internet bots are watching us now with Semtex, C4 and DHS in the same message).
