so, everyone in the state can buy a handgun but nobody can buy gasoline proof aerosol paint? What to do, what to do? Sneak over the border and smuggle in good paint or pay full whack for a professional spray job? There is a better way. Go buy an at least 8 CFM air compressor and a paint gun and a GOOD QUALITY breathing mask. (breathing paint fumes is BAD for you) Make an ersatz temporary spray booth from 2 x 2s & builder's plastic and pressurize it with your mom's vacuum cleaner. OK, the initial investment is a tad more than a professional paint job but now you have an air compressor that will last you a lifetime. Next comes all those air tools that make work so easy and fit so well on your Christmas list. For instance, an air nailer/stapler will fling up your spray booth so quick you wouldn't believe it.

Did you sand off the old paint on the side covers or repaint over the old?

I have been looking into paiting my bike and thinking about what I can afford and do.

I had a local body shop offer a quit for repainting the tank, fairing, side covers, trunk and side boxes, total was going to be around $ 1,500.00. For that they will redo the entire paint job from surface up to clear coating.

I think for the price of a couple of cans of paint and maybe lots of wax i can live with a little hazing on the finish

It is MORE than hazing. I have NOT been able to keep paint on the tank I use at the moment. I have been trying to do my own paint, but I now must move, so no more booth, or air compressor for a while. Trust me , it should be easy to find a "local" to shoot the clear with hardener/catalyst over your paint. just ask with a sixpack in hand.

Anyone even thinking of laying out that kind of money on a paint job would for sure do better to take the cash to Harbor Freight or whoever instead and spend it on an air compressor and all the other gear needed to blow your own paint. Betcha there'd be money left over, too.
One slow speed step-off and that fancy custom paintjob is toast and you are out the $1,500. If you own the gear to do it yourself a wrecked paintjob is just another opportunity to consider a colour change.

Duplicolor clear engine enamel (DE1636Clear)..heat resistant, oil and gas resistant (has to be..it's an engine enamel)...has a very nice finish. Did all of my bodywork with it and it turned out very nice.

There's a difference between being gas proof, gas resistant and gas soluble.
Gas proof is what your bike was originally painted with.
Gas resistant means if you wipe it off quickly enough it won't do much damage.
Gas soluble we don't need to discuss.

How about epoxy based paints? You can get some of them at your local RC hobby store. Besides, its not like you need enough to paint a whole car.

Guy, Prom , and all. What most of you do NOT understand is CALIFORNIA does NOT get the same formula of paint as the rest of the country. I have Duplicolor on my motorcycle, with clear coat, and gas will just wash it off. I used a spray gun for another project, and with the two part paint, it works well. It STILL is NOT the same formula you can buy in the rest of the country, but at least it works. Some of the body shops here will, for a price, purchase paint in Nevada or Arizona, and paint your show vehicle with that.
