A couple of helmet questions

    Hope your still listening...

    I actually have the Nolan Outlaw, and I LOVE it. But yea, you might want to try it on first. I got mine at the local Harley dealer (only there for the helmet, not the bikes), and I really liked it. Very nice to be able to just flip it up for some fresh air at red lights or gas stations. Oh, and the vents rock any time of the year.

      I'm always listening, Blackmage. Thanks. What made you buy the Outlaw instead of the Solid? Didn't like the Nolan logo?

        Is the Solid still modular? If so, I think that's the original one I tried on. However, when they tried to order the next size up (the one I tried was a bit small), they said 2 weeks later they didn't make them anymore and gave me the Outlaw for the same price.

        And besides, the logo isn't held on very well and fell off mine pretty quick.

          Yeah, the Solid is still modular. Apparently the only difference is the logo. Odd. Good deal on getting it for the same price, though. Thanks for the input!

                Prom is right. I rented a Harley once and they would not let my passenger ride with me until..."ride solo to the end of the street and back first" My passenger held her helmet while I practiced. Those 4 blocks did not take long. Rental Guy said "OK" (It cost some $, but it was better than ok & more than worth it. ) She said she liked my Yamaha better.

                  my .02 cents

                  I have a Nolan N-102 with the n-comm feature...I have yet to hook up anything thru it but when not in use it it closed off...other ppl i know have a comm system in their Nolan and the nice thing abt it is the foam pcs near the ears are velcroed on and pull out giving you ample space to add earbuds or any other type of headphones comfortably!I dont know what the differences are between the N102 and the Outlaw...but I think others have answered that...as for how I like my nolan flip face helmet...I love it...I ride with it closed but when I stop I flip it up for more air or to talk or hear a riding buddy...plus I can wear both my hearing aids and glasses and still put the helmet on or off without any hassles.As for the issue of DOT/Snell safety standards well there is alot of debate abt their tru validity...one thing I am sure of...compared to riding around wearing only half or 3/4 helmets for the past 30 odd yrs... this modular Nolan offers alot more safety and protection than I ever had before...I also own a Shoei TZ-R full face non-modular helmet.I use it more in the winter and the Nolan in the Summer.

                    I might add that my Shoei has even better ventilation and airflow thru it than the Nolan.The Shoei is also a tigher fit on my face and is a quieter helmet from the road noise point of view.The Nolan is noisier but since I am hearing impaired i can effectively cut it off.I like the Nolan's fit better and the ability to flip open the face is very convienient as well

                      You shouldn't buy a helmet with any "space" or looseness in it's fit. It should be snug/bordering on too snug when fitted. However, there shouldn't be any spots that are tight enough to be uncomfortable, as they will drive you slowly insane on a long ride.

                      Your helmet will break in and conform to your head with some use, so don't get one that isn't snug..a good reason to go to a shop and try them on, especially if you plan to buy the same model online.

                        I second that "not too snug". I got an HJC (which is great in all regards but this one) when I started riding and it was real snug. I didn't notice it at the store in the 30 seconds I tried it on, but on a good 2 hour ride, I sure noticed how my ears were all scrunched up. 6 hours = painful. I always have to keep pushing the helmet down to alleviate the discomfort.

                        So keep in mind your ear comfort. If they don't fit into the padding comfortably, keep looking. For something as important (and as pricey) as a helmet, it's worth the extra time to find the right one.

                          Fit is EVERYTHING

                          You really must try it on before you buy every brand is slightly different when it comes to size. I myself have a full face scorpion and half face for saddlebags with hiding face plate for saddlebag in summer and love them as I also found 200 about same as 400. My wife has modular Nolan and loves it and wouldn't give it up for anything.                             Thank you so much Isippell. That article was wonderfully enlightening. I wish I had known about it when I was buying my helmet. It would have saved me a lot of running around harassing people for information they didn't have, as well as more piece of mind buying a helmet.

                            At the time I did manage to discover that for the most part all the helmets were safe and the price difference would more concern weight, venting and name-branding. Its nice to see that supported by this survey, while it showed some were significantly better than others this particular line made me feel better:
                            In our new results, no helmet exceeded 250 Gs in the 10-foot drop, and the vast majority of the 7-foot drops stayed well below 200 Gs.
                            though now I have much more information at hand in deciding on a helmet.
