Has anyone here completed any of the IBA [ Iron Butt Asoc.]rides? Here is their website. http://www.ironbutt.com/about/default.cfm I am thinking about doing the 1000 in 1 and the 1500 in 36 rides. If you document it properly you can combine them. It is always something I wanted to do. I've done several 1000 miles days on my 650 Seca, but since they were more by accident than design I never documented them. Since my XS is much more comfortable and I do have a few 750 to 800 mile days on it, I don't think that it would be impossible to do. I know that it makes no sense to do, no logical reason, so much the better.

I did one July '06 on "Daily Ride. I didn't document it, so I DON'T have the cert. I rode from Stillwater, OK to Cleveland, OH in 23 hours, just to see if I COULD do it.
I may try one this summer, going from CA to TX, or on the way home.Ray Matteis

I think the closest I have come to that is 650 miles from DFW to Pueblo Colorado in around 10 hours. It was a while ago. Luckily there were no troopers between Amarillo and Pueblo. I don't think I was going less than 95 all the way from Amarillo till I hit Colorado. That is some flat country out there. Eventually, I want to plan out an IBA trip. My theory is that as long as you can feel your legs, your not done riding yet. Some good tunes helps you get along. I know my dad has done it plenty of times on his full dress F but It is a lot different on a naked bike.United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY

A buddy of mine is doing the 4 corner tour, in June this year.
http://www.usa4corners.org/
I considered going with him, just to show his $18,000 2005 RS Tour Deluxe, that it has nothing over the XS11 Venture.
I would just have to alert the 'XS emergency net' to be on standby, in case I broke something.
However, I can't justify the $1500 or so it will cost in gas, let alone places to stay along the way.
Also, as I pointed out, the US 4 corners is too easy, compared to a Canadian 4 corners tour of Vancouver, Toronto, St Johns NF, Inuvik.Last edited by Crazcnuk; 01-30-2008, 06:56 PM.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

I am seriously considering one myself if I can get the bike mechanically straightened out. From my house to my parents' place in Mesa, AZ, the maps say 1050 miles. Most of it is boring riding along I-40, but you could eat up a lot of miles quickly on it. I just wouldn't want to be foggy headed riding that road between Snowflake and Globe Arizona. It's not so much flying off one of those ridges... it's that sudden stop at the end after hundreds of feet. The IBA would be something cool to have, but it's definately not worth getting killed over.
I figure I can do the majority of the route and take 5 or 6 hours of sleep before hitting that part and still make it in plenty of time. Extra fuel carried somewhere would be a must with those long desert distances between gas.
TodTry your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.
You can live to be 100, as long as you give up everything that would make you want to live to be 100!

"Not that rough."
Did the 1,000 miles in 18 hours heading back from Denver. (Three states with nothing but rain)
A word of warning: Do not rely on your odometer. I stopped in La Grande, Oregon when the odometer said 1,015 as I was wet and tired. Had the gas station guy fill out the paperwork. No place to sleep for the night, so I continued on to Pendelton, Or.
(continued from an earlier post... as I'm too lazy to retype, but you get the idea)
Checked the Iron Butt site the next day. They confirm distances using Internet mapping sites, like Map Quest, and such. I picked one and typed in Broomfield, Co to La Grande, Or to see what it registered. Oh, great! 990 miles! TEN STINKIN' MILES SHORT! I explore the "Iron Butt" rules and regulations a little closer, which I should have done in the first place.
Ok... everything is pretty straight forward, but they have alternate rules for special situations. Like... you reach your destination... and there's no gas station from which you can receive a printed receipt with a date/time stamp on it to prove your arrival time. You are allowed to go to an ATM machine or such, draw out some money, and use the date/time on the receipt for an ending document.. Well, now, I might have just pulled this off after all.
Sure... My witness statements were from La Grande, Oregon, confirming my erronious mileage at midnight, , but I have Habib's computerized credit card receipt from Pendleton, Oregon, an hour later, giving me a "Map Quest" official distance of 1041 miles in under twenty four hours.
(I never did submit the Iron Butt paperwork... see my reference above concerning lazy)"Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor, not a mechanic!' ('Bones' McCoy)

On a lighter note:
After reading your post, I didn't understand why you didn't turn in your paper work. It took me a second but then I realized, who would want an iron butt? Maby an aluminum one at least. Titanium would be cool.United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY

Diver Ray, If you want to do the Iron butt going to TX we could do the first stop for the night at El Paso. That would be 1139 mi for your first day...... 783 mi for me.You can't stay young forever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life...

I used to ride from St. Maries, Id. to Seattle and back, for breakfast several times a summer. Used to leave at 11pm and get back in time to catch a nap and go to work at 3pm the next day, I did that for about 10 years. I never paid much attention to the mileage, but I think it's some where around 540 one way, I quite when I moved out here, but now I ride to Lewiston, Id. to visit my parents on the weekends and that's about the same distance, sometimes I just eat dinner or lunch and then head back. Thats why I want a bigger tank, it a long way between Othello Wa. and Lewiston Id. if you can't gas up in Pomroy Wa. in the middle of the night, which is when I like to ride.Fastmover

I have done 2 saddle sore 1000 rides. from IBA certified finishers page:
Brent Hoovestol Buford, GA 03/05/02 Yamaha XS1100SG 1,020
This ride was done by myself with 4 gallon special tank. (I did carry one qt of fuel in saddle bag, 'just in case'. Camped & Slept several hours in the middle of this ride.
Stewart Shearer Dacula, GA 05/08/04 Kawasaki Nomad 1,025
James J. Bates Bethlehem, GA 05/08/04 H-D Road King 1,025
Brent Hoovestol Buford, GA 05/08/04 H-D Road King 1,025
This was a group of 3 bikes and seemed a little harder for me.
JP honneywell did a bun Burner gold -1500 in 24 hrs. He did this on an xs11 he called Great White. It had a large custom tank and a big (pilcher?) fairing.
Not many IBA rides being done on XS/XJ or any classic bike for that matter.
