Howdy from Texas! XS11.com looks like a place that can help me with my new find, 1978 XS-11, I owned a new one in 78 at 20 years old, that bike went straight to the drag strip the day it was purchased, best time 1/4 mile was 11.86@114mph, still have the time slips from Green Valley Race City. owned it 2 years, anyway, this one has sat for 11 years, so it will take a little maintenance to get it road worthy, just picked it up from the original owner, the plan is to get it in the standard form, I just removed the sissybar, luggage rack, and Samsonite luggage. had the big Yamaha seat on it. next week will start the fun and bring back some great memories from the late 70's. btw, this one will not see the drag strip. hehehe

Great looking 'E you've got there, wheelie. Those pipes may prove to be one of the best things about it as you try to keep it in/get it back to standard form. That, and the fact that it still has all its sidecovers and emblems.

      Welcome to the site!

Wow, great looking bike! There is a ton of info about the 11 here for your perusal, should you need it. Quite a few members from Texas, too.

Looking forward to seeing it when it's done!

no problem, sorry about that. Got the fairing off, that thing is heavy, I should have the stock headlight in a couple of days, the fuel tank is nasty inside, how should I go about cleaning? car wash pressure sprayer? Then a good flush with wd-40 then gas flush?

            tank is nasty inside

depends on if it's rust or just old gas turned to $hit.
Sitting that long would imagine the petcocks and carbs need to be cleaned too. Probably most of the hoses are toast.

            Looking great on the outside.

An old trick I use to clean rust out of a tank is to use Petrolium jelly and marbles/nut/bolts. Dump the whole jar of jelly in the tank, then a couple of handfulls of of the marbles/bolts/nuts. shake the tanks for awhile ( could turn out to be a good work out to ) let it sit a bit ( Let the petrolium jelly do it's job) Continue this action time and time again for a few days. After you dump the mixture out, and the tank is clean, re-cream the inside. Good as new.

Czekus, did you mean Naval Jelly for eating the rust out of the inside of the tank?

I just completely stripped mine by taking it to a guy I know who has an acid tank. However I'm doing a full respray and yours looks good (very good), I've heard good things about seafoam and it improved mines perofrmance when I ran it through the tank.

                      Good find

Yep ... great looking 11. I got in a similar frame of mind about a year and a half ago .... In my case it was a mid life crisis, chasing the feeling I had when I was riding my new 11 in '79.

Gotta' caution ya' though, W .... these bikes can grow on ya' .... I up to 4 now, three running and a parts SF. Number five on the way ....

Whew! I was wondering what would happen if wheelie slopped a big gob of vaseline inside his tank with a handful of nuts and bolts!

Took off the tank tonight, it looked bad on the inside, still had half a tank of bad gas in it, flushed it a few times with fresh gas, removed the petcocks and flushed a couple of times, took it to the car wash and really cleaned the inside, lots of stuff coming out where the petcocks were, it looks great on the inside, flushed with more gas a few times to remove any moisture. I will start the carb cleaning tomorrow night.
