  • diesel XS anyone??

Been struggling with my SF for nigh-on a year now ... the one in a thousand pieces that I went to Oregon and trailered back. Big mistake ... live and learn (and pay) ... anyway, the whole project has been one to remember... full of great XS lessons from the pros on this forum and some other lessons more forgetable..

After re-installing the carbs for about the 10th time for flooding issues, today I thought I had it licked. This time I had found a float rubbing against the side of the bowl. Fixed that and set 'em all to .950 drained and refilled the oil, added a gallon of fuel to the approximately half a gallon left in the tank, primed it and hit the button.

Couple hits on the button and it fired ... but only for a few seconds ... over and over and over ad nauseum .... went through everything I could think to do and finally called Planedick for his advice. Everything he suggested I had already done ... I have learned to listen very closely as he really knows this bike well.

Even Planedick could not have guessed what I found next ... when I unscrewed a float bowl drain plug, I noticed an odd odor ... What? ...... F*****G DIESEL !!!. Geez .... Musta' grabbed the wrong can, eh?

When I called Dick back and told him, I thought he would bust a gut ... and I laughed too. Who would a thunk it? But I have a precedent .... last summer, I did the same thing IN REVERSE to my MBZ diesel .... the right fuel sure helps .... a lesson in humility ... one should always be able to laugh at ones self, right? Think I'll take myself for a ride now .....

        Gotta love a laugh...

Anyhoo, I'm off to Dremel my exhaust nuts off, then I think I'll add battery acid to my middle gear housing.

        Merry Christmas!

You know, I've heard that some people actually lable their cans. Or buy a yellow can for diesel, red for gas.

Bet they don't have any funny stories to though.

Terrific, I've found another group of folks I share a common bond with. I too am an idiot. Last year I destroyed a brand new two stroke snowblower by not clearly marking gas cans. Hard to explain to SWMBO...

I too am guilty of putting Deisel in a Gas motor!

About 14 years ago, I worked at a automation machinery manufacturer, we had a gas and fuel pump, on site.
They were on oppisite sides of the same pump....grabbed the wrong one, FILLED the tank and drove away, made it about 3 blocks, to the maintenance building, took the mechanic 2 days to fix the truck....

I've also run out of fuel in my semi a few times, not just once!!!!

Yup .... $hit happens ... I had the can marked 'Gas' so... go figure?? ... how it got diesel in it was surely an oversight on my part. I've been building another MBZ diesel (I have four here now) right near the bikes .... s'pose I meant to use the fuel in the Benz. Too many projects, too much going on ... going from one project to the next while getting ready to move at the same time ... you'd just have to be here .... ask Planedick .... If the damn can had only leaked a little while I poured from it just like all the other gas cans I have .... mighta' been different.

I've just about got the last of it burned out now .... good news is the carbs, fuel taps and octy seem to be working right.... finally ....so hell, for all I know, it lubed the throttle shafts and blew out some carbon

not as bad as my first oil change on the bike. First I neglected to screw down the oil filter tight enough, so my new oil change ended up on the floor of the garage. Then on the second try I left the oil cap off and had oil tossed up on my leg. Finally after I got both those right (I do learn) I had filled it with too much oil and it bled onto the floor again from what I assume is some kind of overflow tube.

Highly frustrating and amusing at the time given that I've always done the maintenance on the car.
                      Looking for an XS

                            back in the day ....

I was working at an MBZ dealer in Colo Spgs. We had a tech on the Datsun/Nissan side named Harold. Now, Harold did like to toke up a bit before work ... we knew this because he always smelled like burnt weed. Anyway .... one day he was welding an exhaust pipe on a brand new 200SX. Car was up high on the rack ... Harold was standing up, welding overhead when the interior caught fire. All that plastic and nylon carpet .... imagine

But he just went right on welding ... clueless that there was a problem ... and I don't believe I'll ever forget lookin' down the line toward Harold's stall where some noise was comming from .... was surreal .... welding away was he, the baby blue Nissan totally ablaze above, billowing smoke and flame from the windows. Car-beque.
