  • Horseback riding eh

Well the people with nothing better to do then crunch the numbers have done so. They have determined that horseback riding is indeed more unsafe then motorcycling. It appears that there are more life threating and serious head injuries caused by falls from horses then accidents on motorcycles. I wonder if you'll soon need horseback riding insurance and if it will be offered seasonally. Their already talking about making it mandatory to wear body armor and helmet to go horseback riding.
What's next ... I guess soon they will forbid us to leave our homes as we might fall and hurt ourselves.

I also heard that except it was deemed three times more dangerous. I never did care much for riding horses

        Hey Mason,

We can't ask Chris or his wife....they're both in the great beyond!

I think they need Seatbelts and an airbag!

A helmet will only go so far, as seen with the recent incidents....
ie. Russ....still suffered a neck injury and came close to paralysis!

I know, we need something like an airbag...but make it a neck bag.....mounted into the helmet, inflated with a CO2 cartridge, have it connected with a pull chord to the bike/horse/saddle so upon leaving the vehicle, it would inflate BEFORE impact!

Okay, you heard it here first! Now how do I apply for a patent?

My bro-in-law showed me that they were making neck braces for the crotch rocket racing crowd now.

I have horses. My wife has hit her head twice on the ground after falling off. Once before we got married, probably why she agreed to marry me. Once since then, probably why we are still married. She's so very 'special' to me now!

I usually make the wife wear her mountain biking helmet when we go trail riding. I usually wear my mountain biking helmet too, but I'm actually on a mountain bike.

Yes we ride horses and bicycles together, amazing isn't it. That's for those who know what I'm talking about.

            For me:

            Horses - 1 broken hand
Mountain bikes - one broken helmet, one cracked elbow
Motocycles - one or two broken fingers

SO FAR Motorcycles win for safest!

When I was in middle school, I went to a school that offered horse back riding courses. I know that the insurance must have been mad-crazy and was probably one of the factors that led to the school going under (was a private school). On the last day our instructor took us out in the hills of Malibu canyon and we galloped back, I was bareback, no helmet, 13 years old on the biggest horse the school had. Hadn't been that scared and exhilarated until my first time on my XS.

                Equestrian safety gear

                Sorry TC,
but it's already been done. The latest version is a multi-piece head to toe protective garment with a padded liner and a sheet steel outer layer. The helmet is locked into the upper body portion to prevent whiplash injuries. The outfit comes with a separate hand-held plaque to display one's colours and a long pole with a mid-point hand grip and a spike on the end - - -

                    Here's one

How about a wrap around air bag so you can bounce like the landing on Mars. Connected to the bike it would deploy just like car airbags, before you became seperated from the bike or even felt any impact.......

                        Hey Mason,

From what I've seen on the tube, it's a strap setup that secures the helmet to the roll cage/frame of the car, so that during hard impacts, it helps hold the helmet in position with the driver's body, so that they don't get the whiplash effect. SO....since we don't have a rollcage or frame around us, don't think that design will work. But I don't watch Nascar, so you might be talking about some newer design that I haven't seen!?

no topcat,i am not aware of any specifics, i have seen these things on tv motorsports, while surfing thru channels, i guess preventing the head from hyperextension, might be tantumount to a post trauma neck brace, done pre-accident.

hey anything that prevent paralysis is good.

your idea, is the same, but preserving mobility for the rider.

like all safety gear i think there is a compromise between functonality vs, practical deployment and use, the more restrictive or hard to use a device is, the less is will be used, dependent on the end user's exposure and experence and thus perception and tolerance.

your idea, if perfected would be a passive system, with no forethought by the user, nice sir. very nice.

but referencing the recent kickstand down tread, to be tethered to the bike with a lanyard... hmmm, lots of false alarms....

I had a horse bite the bejesus out of my stomach once. Hurt like hell and left a bruise that lasted two weeks.

Messed up my wrist a little after a bike spill.

                            Pretty much even, I guess.

At least the bike won't bite me!!
