3 rifles, 1 shotgun, 1 pistol, 1 revolver, 387 toy guns around the house (4 kids). All the metal firearms are lock in a cabinet. The kids know not to mess with the 'real' guns. Anytime they are curious about them I or my wife are happy to answer any questions and supervise. She's an ex-cop.

I've had this discussion many times before . Sadly it's as far from the truth as possible <dang>. If you look in the dictionary under the definition of "puritan' it has her picture there.

Can I be the odd one out here?

I don't fall into any of the categories. I have a bike but I don't own a gun. However I am not opposed to gun ownership.

I would, however, favor mandatory licensing and regulation. Just about any activity that has the potential to take a human life instantly is regulated (e.g. motor vehicles, planes, trianes, other occupations, etc.). The purpose of this should be to insure that those who posses guns have the capacity to appreciate a basic level of safety and safe-keeping of these weapons. I would hope that any intelligent, and I consider the members of this board highly intelligent, gun owner might agree with me that we don't want stupid people, gangsta wannabees, and nutcases in college with guns.

And while we're on the subject of personal freedom, and despite being from the live-free-or-die-no-helmet-evar! state, I would not oppose a helmet law. Look, there are plenty of other saftey requirements that we bear without giving it a second thought. Why is this one the one that many bikers cling to? I would think that it would serve the motorcyclist's image a lot better if the "rights" organizations would take the time, resources, and effort from opposing and repealing helmet laws and apply it to legislation requiring motorcycle saftey courses for new riders and higher fines and penalties to motorists found to be at fault for accidents causing injury or death to motorcyclists.

Actually Malber...I want them all to have guns...because the truth is "they"...the kooks are going to have them regardless of any draconian ineffective laws. Criminals are criminals...they have no regard for the law. So some vain attempt to keep them from getting guns only affects law biding citizens. And law abiding citizens are the ones that need firearms. This is a no brainer for me.

A friend of mine here in Oklahoma is a State Rep. He personally understands the absolute necessity for the average citizen to be armed to the teeth. When Terry was in College he was working on a ranch near Enid. It was a large place…several sections (square miles for you city slickers) and the nearest town was 30 miles away.

The owners had gone for a few days leaving Terry to “house sit”. Early one morning about 2 am he said the door bell rang. He was half a sleep when he went to answer the door. I can tell you I live out of the city and I would NEVER answer the door at 2 am without great caution.

He started turning the door knob when a shotgun blast roared through the door cutting his right forearm almost completely off and ripping a huge hole in his right side. He turned and ran down the hall back to the bed room as the intruders fired several rounds from the shot gun and pistol trying to kill him.

He dove and slid under the bed where he retrieved a 357 magnum revolver. As she…that’s right the shotgunner was a woman…ran through the bedroom door to kill Terry. He placed one 158 grain lubaloy directly into that piece of human debris.

Unfortunately it did not kill the witch. She ran screaming back down the hall. Terry peaked around the corner of the door still holding his intestines with what little was left of his right hand. Her accomplice…a man fired several rounds from a semi-auto pistol through the door molding trying to kill him again. He returned fire and the scum ran for their vehicle escaping.

It’s a miracle Terry even hit her. He’s right handed and was forced to defend himself with his left hand.

He called the sheriff and they barely arrived in time to save him as you can imagine. They later caught the perps ( or should I say excrement). They were tried, convicted, and are still in prison at McAlester. He actually had to go fight their parole before. I had no idea criminals of this variety could even get out. But our justice system is soooooo screwed up. AFAIC they should have been executed about 30 days after their conviction. It pisses me off I have to pay taxes to keep this crap alive.

Oh…they were a couple that were working on the same ranch. They knew the owners would be gone. Their plan was to kill Terry and take about $350,000 in collectible art at the ranch.

And like Terry will tell any of us…”don’t think it can’t happen to you!”

The unavoidable problem with passing new gun laws is that criminals, by definition, do not obey the laws already on the books. Washinton DC has the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, yet it heads up the per capita murder rate.
Generally speaking, the "highly intelligent, gun owner(s)" are not the ones creating the problems.
Find a way to get the stupid, the bangers, and nutcases to conform to the existing laws first.

The anti-gun lobby would like us to think the above numbers apply "across the board" which they do not.
What this study lacks is a break down on Race and “social/economical” grouping.
While there are gun deaths in middle class America, over 90 percent are in the inner city's.
The study if done correctly would show that even with Canada's restrictive gun laws it's citizens are not any safer than we are and maybe less safe. (yes, inner city people are citizens but have evolved there own "culture" and there "turf" is a no go zone which liberal policies created and perpetrates )

History shows exactly what governments have done with gun registration, which when government felt threatened was to confiscate the guns of the Law abiding citizen.

Personally not into guns, just XSes
