sorry guys, here's clarification. yes, I did have on full helmet, and from the looks of the front of it, my face would now be repositioned if I hadn't. My only memory so far is an ambulance guy above me saying "buddy, your helmet saved your life tonight.
' mro, I'm 54, otherwise healthy and real curious how long it will be for this body to repair itself.

SO frustrating not knowing what actually occurred. Jeans aren't even ripped. They did cut off leather jacket, dammit.

Back when

When I was much younger I was taken out one night in the rain by an Opossum (sp) in upstate NY. Pretty much the same kind of action only I was going WAY too fast. I didn't sustain very bad injuries like you, but I slid for what seemed like an eternity only barely stopping before being strained through a really taught barbed wire fence. I was wearing a really tight fitting 3/4 helmet that got twisted around when it hit the road nearly wiping my nose right off my face. Had some serious bumps and bruises, but way back when I healed much faster than now I'm sure.

Glad to hear you made it through! Hope you have a quick recovery. Bikes are easy to rebuild, humans are a little more tricky.

Sorry I didn't post earlier, but you might have noticed that I was busy with a fellow Xsive's incident and rally myself! Just got home today.

Looks like we might need a new POLL about who's had some serious bike related injuries and got back on that Iron Horse of theirs and still ride!?

I wonder if perhaps you had been on the XS11, that with it's heavier total mass and inertia that it might have been able to plow thru or over that fox better than the ST?

But hitting any animal is like hitting an oil slick, blood is very slippery, and once it's released, it's very difficult to maintain control.....every try riding on ICE....same kind of thing, similar to Trbig/Tod's recent fresh rain scenario!

Could someone provide a good explanation of the term tankslapper?

I was able to talk with the guy who stopped and called 911.
Turns out that he is a very experienced rider. Although it had just gotten dark. he saw the whole thing. Said I directly t-boned the fox and that it looked like that set up a "tankslapper" from which I could not recover. I went down hard in my lane and the bike continued on its own, crossing over the oncoming lane right in front of my witness, and into a yard. Guess that explains a lot less bike damage than I had envisioned. I was happy to hear from an experienced rider that it looked like I probably could not have done anything differently. Still don't remember anything so this was invaluable information from a good guy.

I wonder where Diver Ray got such experience and kept all of the group safe on our ride. I have read about all the mishaps at other group rides and just have to express my stupidity when I was on the ride at S. Lake Tahoe. I was in the back because I was making movies of the ride and I remember being upset because we were going too slow for me. I guess I didn't know how lucky I was that Ray was leading and Edgar was the caboose. I'm sure now that if I was leading we probably would have lost several. I will definately remember that.

When I was first learning to ride, I was on a group ride in the Gold Country and didn't make a tight/left/downhill turn, running off into the rain culvert, Somehow, I didn't go down, but continued riding in the ditch, bouncing off rocks. I remember trying to decide if I should dive into the road or into the granite rubble next to the culvert. Then I hit a big rock and bounced onto the road, still upright...and kept going! The guy riding drag came up next to me in the next straight and yelled "NICE SAVE!" I just said thanks and didn't mention that I hadn't done anything...my damned XS just didn't want to go down!
