learned my lesson today. make sure ur kick stand is up!!
left my buddys house, got bout 1/2 mile down the road and had a pretty good left turn in the road. went to lean into the turn and i heard a loud scrap and thought oooo ****. kick stand was down and i couldnt turn left, hit the brakes couldnt slow quick enough and hit the feild about 30-40mph and layed her down. man it all happen so fast.
bent my handle bars, bent hand brake lever, shattered mirror, shattered rear turn signal, bent foot brake, and bent the heal-to shifter, scratched up my 6 dollar paint job, and got mudd and weeds stuck in places.
i scraped my left butt cheek and pulled a calf muscle (sux walking). my bookbag took most of the fall.
picked it up, left it sit for a few mins, cranked it for about 45 seconds and she fired right up!! messed around with the shifter to get it into 2nd and limped it home in 2nd.
i must say, this is a pretty durable bike, took a beating and keeps on runnin. fix up the cosmetics and it should be good to go.

I'm glad you're reasonably OK... Could have been a lot worse, just ask John.

yep, if I remember correctly John did the same thing. Except a field would have been a dream compared to what he got. I have had several close ones with the kick and have been considering trying to do something like the kill switch on the XJ's.

I wonder how difficult it would be to put a spring of some sort on it so as soon as the bike is lifted off the side stand the stand would pop up. surely with the guys we have on the board here someone could figure it out and not have it be some big ugly thingee.... Glad your OK ... or as OK as can be expected

My accident was June of '05. I was out of work for six months, but in that time I, with a lot of help from Wildkat, was able to 'Put Humpty Dumpty Back Together Again", and take a buddy's xs11 that been sitting for 4-5 years, and go through it extensivley, and make it road worthy.

I suppose just about all of us have done the same thing at one time or another with varrying results. The latest addition to my collection is an '84 GS1150ES. It has a side stand "idiot" light on the dash and I've still taken off with the stupid thing down. Obviously that is why all the new bikes come with some form of safety switch cutting out either the starting or ignition circuit. It would be pretty simple to build a safety relay with a small pushbutton switch or even something like a brake light switch to interrupt the starting circuit.
If it aint broke....it aint mine!:(

                      Fly-up sidestand

                      Hi Bigb,
as said, it coulda been worse. There's a post in this list somewhere saying that in (I think) Germany sidestands are made so they fly up automatically when the bike's weight comes off 'em. Seems one could modify a North American style stays-down-until-you-lift-it sidestand by moving the spring pivot &/or building the stand stop with a dab of weld so it too was automatically self-parking.

                          eMust be on automatic

I don't know what the difference is, but I am always forgetting the kickstand. All kinds of situations, but it never has been a problem, it just goes up with the first contact with the ground or road. I always figured it was just another of the inovations that Yamaha had on these bikes. I just can't understand what the difference between mine and others is if there is any.

A buddy and I pulled out of the gas station last night me on the XS him on the Venture and I had the damn kick stand down he went to say something and it flipped up before he could get the words out of his mouth. So even when I leave it down it comes up as soon as I move and it scrapes a tad.

Most of the time they will be kicked up upon first contact.
But have had a close call or two where it still went up but if the jolt of it hitting had been but a little harder could have been disasterous. Funny that it was never a problem on the "H" cycles I've had.
