  • Three-eyed tail end

I finally got around to fixing my rear fender after my rear-end incident. I got a rear fender from a guy off craigslist in Belmont, NH. Model and year unknown but I think it's from a 78 or 79 because of a hole at the bottom edge. I had to hammer out a dent on it where the holes for the license bracket go and there was a minor crease there, but it gets covered by the bracket mount. There's a little pitting on the chrome. The seller discounted it a bit saying that there was rust on the underside, but there's less rust on this one than on the original fender. The license bracket is courtesy Ken Talbot (thanks Ken!) and the lens was purchased NOS from the Freedom Cycle in Concord. Follow the link to see the three-eyed rear end:

The light works with the ignition on. I still need to wire the yellow/green wire to the brake switch so it will light up with the stock brake light.

In retrospect, I should have taken a side view of the mangled fender. It looked a lot worse than the picture shows. After the accident it was folded up under itself, like a taco. I had to bang it out flat to make the bike ridable. I still have the fender and license bracket if anyone's making a rat bike XS.

      Pull the housebrick

      Hi Malber,
now you have the '79 tail light you don't need that huge red plastic housebrick of an upper tail light any more. Once you take it off you have two real nice extra strongpoints to go with the ones where the grabrail attaches to the upper shocks to bolt on a luggage rack.

Thanks Fred. I'll keep that in mind if I ever want to mount a luggage rack. Right now, after being rear-ended, I like the idea of putting more lights back there.
