    Thanks for the advice/list.
I have a tempurpedic pillow ($95) that I've used for quite awhile. Small but very durable, dosent wear out.
The company I'm going to work for (Dot Foods) has Volvo tractors. Most have bunk bed sleepers so I will have a desk and a bunk or an extra bed if one of my kids rides along.
I've had a decent toiletry kit for a long time. I lived out of the camper of my pick-up in my (bicycle) racing days.
They told me for the 1st 6 months or so I'll be using any available tractor. After that I will be assigned a tractor so I can 'personalize' it (move my stuff in). Until then I have a bedrool and small suitcase with 4 days clothes, shower shoes, towel, etc., all ready to go.
I already have a logbook case so I'm set there. I currently have a Verizon pre-pay plan but I'm looking to possibly get an iPhone so I'd switch to AT&T. We've talked to them about a package deal as we already have Dish Network (owned by AT&T), AT&T DSL, and AT&T long-distance. So adding wireless with 4 phones should still lower our overall expense. Dot Foods requires me to have a cell phone so they give me $25/mo. for cell phone.
They supply my clothes (uniforms). Up to $100 for steel-toe boots (required). They reimburse all work-related expenses weekly. Submit receipts by Sat. and get $ back on Tue.
Most of their runs are to LA and back so I'm home nearly every other night. They also run up to WA and ID so those runs are 4-5 days.
I don't know if I posted this earlier but they guarrantee $50,000 my 1st year. If for some reason I don't make that, they'll cut a check for the difference. Most (solo) drivers that have been there 3 years are averaging $75-80,000/yr.
    I'm in.
    As for the ride-along,
we went to San Diego. made 3 deliveries. Two of them were 2 blocks from a warehouse I worked at in 1979 and 80. Then we headed to LA to swap our empty trailer for a full one and hauled it back to Modesto (home). If I was getting paid for that run (I was just observing) I would have made $450 in those 2 days (left Wed and got home Thur).
Looks like we just made it past that big-rig pile-up on I-5
    truck crash story
We were in that tunnel just hours earlier.

Now more people to wave to

          I've got my CDL.
Got the job with the company I wanted.
Got through the training period two weekd early.
          Now I'm on my own.
They're starting me easy (too easy I think). Mostly I'm hauling full trailers to our L.A. drop yard and bringing emptys back. Too bad I can't (legally) make it back in one day. Being new I'm keeping it by the book. Occasionally I take a full trailer to L.A. and swap for an empty then pick-up an order the next day and head home.
I went to Las Vegas on the 30/31st. Nice going somewhere new (never been to Vegas).
One thing I've found is the truck driver passing me (I get a 2 cent per mile bonus for keeping it under 60 MPH) waves. Now besides waving to bikes I wave to trucks.
What a happy, waving, brotherhood world we live in.
The negatives I've found in my short career:
          Privacy using the restroom,
          Motorhomes,
          Pick-ups pulling travel trailers,
Those waving truck drivers when we get to the dock.
All in all it's been cool so far, give it time.

I would not suggest or recomend to anyone to drive a truck. I had fun driving when i was young but there is too many rules and regulations these days.
I got tired of driving for big companys and now have been working for a neighbor three years. No benifits at all but i get a load and deliver it and everyone is happy. No tracking devices.I can drive any way i want as long as the freight gets there. Sometimes i make great money. I drove 901 miles two weeks ago and brought home $725.00. One week last month i drove 2000 miles and brought home $1875.00. I usally make about $700.00 to $800.00 a week.I work on comission. If every thing goes as planned i usally work four and a half days a week.
I drive a flat top pete streached to 285" wheelbase,550 hp cat with a 18 speed tranny. I have a picture some where.
I also am able to transport bikes.I gave this Venture to a good friend of mine that lives in Texas. The day i delivered it i bought the Maxim i am working on now.
I get to visit friends i have met on the internet and ride bikes places i would never get a chance to ride if i didn't drive a truck. I have drove my truck down the trail of the Dragon in Tennessee delivering a transformer to lake alcoa.
Good luck with your work. As i always say,"Everyone has to be somewhere and here i am".

Here is a truck i drove before i got my Pete. 475 Cat with 13 double over tranny. Great work truck. I delivered a lot of military freight to Ft. campbell,Ky.On the hood there is a sticker that says,"No Class at All". I didn't go to truck driving school. I never saw a school until the middle 80"s.
I started over the road delivering garmets to 7th ave and 38th street in Manhattan in 1979. The guy that hired me told me if i could get that truck to Manhattan and back i was a truck driver. Man was he right! I really enjoyed the job after i got used to it. I would always play "New York is not my home" by Jim Croche when i was going out of the Lincoln Tunnel into New Jersey.

I always keep my road atlas open on the page of the state where i am driving in case the road is shut down i can jump off and go around.
I was going to Birmingham yesterday and I 65 was closed just north of malfunction junction.(I 20/59+I 65 split) for 1 1/2 hour because of a fatility accident.
I was coming out of Birmingham after loading and I 65 was closed again just North of malfunction junction!
It does help to have the CB on so you don't get caught in traffic.

I'm on my longest dispatch yet.
Since I started work I've been running up and down the west coast. San Diego to Seattle. Jaunts out to Las Vegas occasionally. Even to Idaho.
This trip started on 7/21/08 heading to Fife, WA (Seattle) for a delivery. I then went to Kennewick, WA for a pick-up. While in Kennewick I was met by my in-laws who were there for a funeral. A couple of weeks ago we visited my in-laws in Boise, ID and my 14 year-old stayed with them so I got to see him too. I asked if he wanted to come home with me but he said no (having too much fun).
The load I picked-up is headed to Mt Sterling, IL and they had me bring it. Usually I'd take it back home (Modesto, CA) or meet an IL driver in NV ot WY.
So I proceeded thru ID, UT, WY, NE, IA, MO, to IL.
Got here yesterday (7/27/08). Well, they have no load for me to head home with. I have to hang out here for 34 hours anyway (restart my Hours Of Service). So to avoid sitting and not making any money, I'm taking a load to Zanesville, OH tonight and swapping trailers there with a driver from MD. I'll be back to IL on Tues and they should have a load for me to take home then.
With my usual dispatches I'm home a couple of days each week, pretty cushy. This trip is more of what truckers' life is about.. I've never been this far east and I'm seeing a lot of the country I've never seen before. I'm a sentimental (emphesis on 'mental') person so it felt special when I crossed the continental divide, the Missouri river, and the Mississippi river. Last night I saw some strange things and I think they were fireflies. I've never seen them before.
This is a great country with lots to see. I decided to drive truck to see some of it and I am impressed. Fellow XSives live in these places and you are all lucky.
The downside to this trip (and the life of a trucker) is being away from family. Mt birthday was spent at a (very nice) truckstop in Cayonville, OR. Had a shower (clean showers) then took the shuttle to the 7 Feathers Casino for "all you can eat" prime-rib buffet. I ate a lot of prime-rib.
Tomorrow is my 18th wedding anniversary and I will spend it on the road. The next day my oldest son (17 years old) leaves for Bejing, China to perform in the Bejing Olympic Orchestra and Marching Band. This group consists of 2008 high school students from around the world. We got an Email last week saying they are going to perform in Tienimen Square <sp>. This is the first time any forgieners have been allowed to perform there, ..... ever. It will be closed and only 2000 spectators are allowed. I told my son not to stand in front of the tanks, just let them go by.
So as cool as my trip is, his will be even better and I'm proud and happy for that. He said he would have liked me to come too. I would love to but I think it will be better for him as a young man to experience this on his own. My wife is fussing over his packing (or lack thereof). I told her that if he forgets something he can get it there (XScept for the trumpet). After all, isn't that where clothes come from, China?

As you travel down the road look for a DOT FOODS truck, it might be me. I'm definately looking for you guys/gals.

                            You guys are nuts...

I spent the last 18 years of my life driving a truck!
You all make it sound so bad!!
Why are you still on the road? I have hauled gasoline and oil for all of these years, sleeping in my own bed, making the big money, and modeling on the side. After 18 years, I'm retired...I'm a effin executive at a truck school now! I don't work hard anymore, don't have to...
Yeah, I know I'm gonna be sorry, but as a woman in a man's world, I can't help it! I was the mistress of all I surveyed, had the respect of all the men I worked with(the ones that mattered)and have a perfect record of service, and a perfect driving record, pushing 2 million miles.
I get paid to be on call, and I work for the largest LNG outfit in the US! I've worked 5 days at it, and still get paid $1000 a month to be on call from Dec. to Mar. 1st.
I've had a great life, I have become the person I am, due to the truck! I wouldn't trade it for the world. And I laugh every time my boss says, 'You need to do this, or else'. Yeah, sure, I'll make three times as much with a phone call tomorrow. Go pound sand...
A good driver is worth their weight in gold. I watch Ice Road Truckers and they look like a bunch of 'Nancy Girls' to me. I am so tempted to sign on just to embarrass them.
C'mon boys! Where's your sense of adventure? Life is short...and don't tell me you don't enjoy 'what's her name' at the truck stop! She never bothered me, but then again, she'd be barking up the wrong tree...
I outran every man that challenged me, and still will. I left at the top of my game, before the fragile male ego could out do me. I would go back in a heartbeat if I thought I could land better than I am now.
I am the Director of Placement. When you guys want a better shake, let me know.
