  • Hello

My name is Paul and I own a 1983 XJ1100 Maxim. I've been lurking here a bit and have gained a lot of knowledge reading your posts. I just bought my XJ a few weeks ago after being without a bike for 20 years. I bought this one because I owned a 400 Maxim at one time and because the price fit my budget. I didn't realize that I had bought such a sought after gem. I'm still getting to know this bike and have spent a lot of time going over everthing. It's amazing what some people call "well maintained"

Luckily it came with a shop manual, It's come in very handy already.

I'll have some questions to post soon as I may have some clutch slippage and a carb overhaul and valve adjustment to deal with.

    Cheers
    Paul

You might find some info for that here.

Welcome aboard .... Yes in deed some people think that washing the biker once a week is "well maintained". I will tell you the same as I tell everyone who finds themselves the proud new owner of one of these bikes.
Give the bike a full going over with the manual as the guide. Change out EVERY fluid the bike carries, ALL OF THEM ... Do a good and carefully cleaning of the carbs including confirming that all jets are correct and floats are the right height and all fuel and air galleries are free flowing including those in the air box.
Clutch slippage "could" be the end result of the PO having used synthetic oil but you will have to go in there to check it out. Order new springs now so you have no down time if metal and fiber plates prove to be go after a good cleaning.
Do all maintenance that is in the manual for the mileage that bike has on it check the maintenance schedule so nothing is missed from previous mileage requirements.

Sounds like an XS/AA meeting We need a 12-step program.
1- I will check for gas in my oil
          2- I will triple-clean my carbs
3- I will clean all electrical connections
4- I will check all electrical grounds
5- I will buy a Tkat fork brace
6- I will replace the glass fuses with spade fuses
          7- I will buy a T.C. SOFA
8- I will replace my fork springs with Progressives
9- I will swap my final drive for one from an XS750
10- I will strive to attain "Guru" status without fluff
11- I will will use the search function before asking the question anyway
12- I will attend as many XS rallies as I can and meet the great people from this group of brothers and sisters that are afflicted with XSiveness as I am or are about to be.
(#1 thru 11 can be modified or changed, #12 cannot)

Did you mean bike or biker? (or does it really make a difference?)
