How many XSives have had the bottom end apart?
I've rebuilt/repaired only 2 lower ends and the only issue I had was cracking the small cover held on with torx screws.
(late night and plain forgot about it when prying the cases apart
    )
What kind of problems have you run into?

    Mine is apart right now.

    Replacing
    Main and rod bearings
    Rods
    Seals and gaskets (of course)
    Timing Chain
    1208cc overbore barrels
    High comp. Pistons
    '78/79 Cams
    HD Clutch (complete unit)

    Mods
    Performance valve job ('80 head)
    Tranny mods
    3 deg Cam Advance

    Externally:
    4 into 2 S&S exhaust
    K&N Air Filter
    Carb rejet
    Progressive shock springs
Replacing all the luggage and fairing pieces
Replacing as much of the (rusty) chrome peices as I can.
    New fuse block

Will probably get an external oil cooler, and a SOFA.

I haven't been able to get the silly rotor off the crank, yet. Finally got a bolt, with the right thread, but it still doesn't want to come off. Other than that, I've had no problems with the disassembly.

All I am waiting for is to get that rotor off, so I can measure up the crank, and see if the new rod bearings, that came with the rods, are the right ones.

I bought a set of 5 main bearings, so should be covered there.

Just found out that my 'COMPLETE' gasket set does not include any of the crank or crancase seals. Will have to order those seperately.

      They can be stuborn.
Have not tried to use the "bolt" to get it off.
Have used three jaw puller and tourch which has worked so far...

Am interested in how your engine will perform with the slotted cam sprockets. I have a set, but have not tried them or the performance cams I have yet.

I've done 2nd gear on my E and big bore on my LG.
I've gone completely through the engine on my Honda Hawk 4 times (same thing as the XS only smaller and more parts). Ah, the joys of racing. Got to where I could remove, disassemble, reassemble, reinstall the engine in about an hour and a half by myself.

"Have not tried to use the "bolt" to get it off."

It's actually designed to be pulled off with a 'Special' tool, which is, in essence a bolt.

I got it off, the only reason I was having trouble is that I have the case split, so I had to rig a way to hold the rest of the crank down, while I applied torque to the bolt.

With an impact wrench or if the engine was still together, it would have come off easily.

One day, when life affords me the time, I will get the spare engine I have finished. I have the jugs off, but it just sits there, all lonely and crying for a good polishing and a full teardown/inspection. Don't really have a place to do it, so it waits until I do. Hopefully it will be very soon.

That's what I have been saying about my GT750 engine, for years.

Now, however I have my XS1100 engine all apart, in my 10'x10' metal yard shed.

So I guess I do have some place to do it!

Had the engine/Trans down to nothing but parts. I was actually surprised, as it was my first endeavor into a motorcycle engine, and when all was said and done, it fired right up the first time, no errors. I guess the clymer manual has good info in it, without that, I'd never got it back together.

I've had a lot of other people's engines completely apart but only a few of my own.

I plan to blueprint the gearbox in my XS11 one of these days to smooth out the shifting but I always seem to have other projects more important.

                            rebuilds

have split mine a couple of times now and two other motors, if following the manual with a fair tool kit, it is a fairly simple process. Not as daunting a project as one might think.

                              No parts left over

Cracking the case is one of the times the old saying 'you should have a couple of parts left over' does not apply. If you do it right everything will go back in. If you have parts left over....better check where from.

Many 'cheap' wheel pullers (like the ones you can get at Harbor Freight) have the correct size center screw. Remove the little foot and it becomes the tool you need. It that will fit in the threaded hole of the rotor (not the threaded hole of the crank). Its 15 or 16 MM (cant remember which) with a fine thread. I used an impact wrench on the bolt and a strap wrench on the rotor to hold it tight. Came off in about two seconds. Then I used the strap wrench and a torque wrench to re-install it.

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.
