When someone asks what kind of bike do you ride?

I generally can't get my mp3 player stopped fast enough but when I do I usually hear things like:

Dude, my dad had one of those........ SWEET

Man I wish I still had mine..... damn I miss it

That looks great........ is it an 81??? (I love hearing someone I.D. it right off the bat)

I just say an 1100 Yamaha...you see the question mark above their head and move on.UJM( Universal Japanese Motorcycle) I think is what most of the bikes of that era were refered to,all dependable,ran good ,looked good....all the bikes in that era ,late '70 and early '80 were great bikes regardles of brand.Harley,Goldwing and maybe BMW are what non riders know now days....important ,not really,what ever YOUR two wheels are below you is:-)

I say "an old Yamaha..... a really fast one". That shuts-up the V-twin crowd and perks the interest of most everyone else. If pressed further I mention I paid $60 and %500 respectively for the two bikes, the $60 one I rode to Canada and back (3,000 trip from here). No one has poo-poo'd my choice of bike(s) yet, if they do I can deal with it .

I've been told a couple of times already what a find I have here. The old owner comes by quite often to see what my latest detailing looks like.

I'm on a VERY tight budget, between jobs now (as of this past Tues), 5 kids in the house and 3 I pay support for, so ANYTHING I can do to the bike or any of my toys is usually something someone else pays for or something I found in my attic or tool chest. Guess I went a little nuts with the Royal Blue paint marker while detailing some parts out. One of my first things I did was get my polish from my trucking days and begin polishing EVERYthing in sight...removed the tank badges that were all broken and faded, and, concurrent with my sense of humor, proceeded to write YOMAMAHA on tank where the badges used to be.

My "restoration" may be low budget and thus far strictly cosmetic at the moment, but there is definitely a gleam in my eye when I tell people everything I've learned about the bike that was made when I was 7 years old. My RAT ROD will continue to thrive in a world of plastic and fatties...

i allways say Midnight Special Yammy 1100, Black gold crome. I allways get a kick when old timers say those were fast bikes. And it was kind of cool when a young guy new . I was just starting what i thought would be long explanation. Bike is a legend.

I tell them it's a classic...one of the ORIGINAL superbikes. Those that know get an appreciative look in their eyes. The younger set just kind of give a blank stare and say "What's a superbike?"
