  • I've Seen It All Now !!!!!!

Well I've seen it all now ... I was coming home from an after work job in the company van and a guy riding a fully dressed Gold Wing pulled up beside me. i looked down from my high perch in the van AND SAW A COFFEE HOLDER AND TRAVEL MUG attached to the handle bars beside the throttle!!! The first thing that went through my mind was GOOD GRIEF MAN go buy a car.
$h*t .. How the He** can you ride a motorcycle and be paying enough attention to preserve his life WHILE HE'S DRINKING COFFEE. Sh*t I bet a guy like that eats cereal with milk on it while driving his car.

      Funny....

I was just thinking of how to build a cup holder for mine...LOL...of course, I ride like a MILE to work, so I usually strap my cup to the back rack and throw a thermos in the bag, but me without coffee is like a porn addict without vaseline!! I get might-y cranky!

...and I'm a bill collector so making me cranky first thing before my shift is NOT good...

I just got my xs1100 (79) from a friend who hasn't been on the thing in 3 years.Said 'Hey man, you got the bug, come get my bike! You can have it, I'm trading up for a dresser anyhow'...DUDE, you cant beat FREE no matter WHAT shape it's in. I figured right away...BASKET CASE, right? Eh, er...NO. 2nd day I had it home it was running. Cleaned out the tank, the carbs, the petcocks, the spiders, bess and bugs, and made it my daily driver. It's VERY ugly at the moment, but a lot of aluminum and chrome polish are bringing it back to life, and some good ol' elbow grease is making the Indigo Blue look good as old.

I've been reading a lot about low-end miss, and I've cleaned this up and adjusted that a bit...ended up leaning her way out like 2 1/4 turns from seated and setting the idle at 1200,where it has a steady POP out the left side (1&2) about every 2 seconds.A bit sluggish on takeoff yet, I find myself riding the clutch at 3000 to get her to move without stalling, but my GOD I do love it. I wouldn't trade it up for a crotch rocket for ANYone! I'm new to the XS, but Im already sold!

        Hey there Hammerhead,

        Congrats on a great find!!

Okay, you've done the 1st carb cleaning, now only 2 more to go!! Well, maybe just one more, for the pilot circuit, probably why you're having to keep it above 3K getting into the mains to get enough fuel to give it power to pull away!?!?

After a ride, are all 4 pipes hot...spritz with water, check for sizzle? Also, turning the pilot screws out 2 1/4 turns is actually richer, the more turns out the richer, stock is 1 1/2 out from seat, but adjustable to suit the bike, your preference!

Also might try putting in about 1/4 can of SEAFOAM or TECHROLINE into the gas tank and run it thru, may help to clear out remaining varnish without pulling carbs back off!

Also, have you seen the tech tips, how to vacuum synch the carbs, check the pickup coil wires , etc.!?

Keep at it, you'll love it even more when you can pull off the line nice and easy OR pulling the front wheel up!

Not much of a coffee drinker are ya?..

          Aw now c'mon Rob...
I have an hour commute each way and ride my XJ every day to work, pretty much rain or shine.
          I gotta have my coffee.

          Hey Hammerhead,
just a little black duct tape around a section of plastic tube. Attached with a windshield mount someone gave me. Leather laced across the bottom and .... Yes...a concho for the hell of it.

I've had a drink holder on my bikes for the better part of 20 years, but never had coffee in it. I use it for COLD drinks.

Carbonated is not a good idea though, as they foam over if you hit the wrong kind of bumps.

            Country Time lemonade works well...

The handlebar clamp is a front turn sigal clamp from a old honda enduro, the basket is from a boat shop the swivel is home made. Now you have seen it all. I guess I shouldn't say anything about the plug-in heated coffee mug. If you put a snap open cap off a water bottle and leave it open soft drinks will stay in the bottle unless you run off a high curb, but thats another story

                      Topcat...

Yes, I've done the carbs twice, the tank twice, the plugs more often than I'd have liked, and still the low-end miss is there. However, I've only just begun to clean.I've done wires, connections, etc, checked plug connections, replaced the fuse panel with inline blades, and have just begun to work with the air/fuel mixture. Seems like I have a nice difference when it's warm now, wants to run like a demon, but cold it still sputters up to 4 grand then takes of flike a cat with gas on its arse.

However, I know this isnt the tech part of the forum, so I'm not looking in here for advice, just letting you know where I stand so far. It's a long road I have yet to find anyone handing out money for the project so....

                      ANYhooo

I'll post pics when I can. I've christened it the Rat Rod for obvious reasons. I labeled the Rat Hat, the Rat Batt, and when it happens...I'll label the Rat Flat!!

I'll be sure to try the seafoam idea and let you know how it works for me. Might be a while though...I'm not very close to any sea. Will Great Lakes foam work?

                        Hammerhead,
IF your too far away to find SeaFoam, try looking for Berryman's B12 Chemtool. I know it may be hard to do, looking for another mans tool, but it also works well.

                          LOL!!!

No, another man's tool isn't first onmy list of things to find fer sure.

A great ride in the afternoon sun along the Grand Canyon of the East, now THERES something on top of my list! Letchworth State Park is one of the greatest places I've been and it's right in my backyard. 21 miles of gorge, 3 sets of waterfalls, AND a cool railroad trestle too! Camping, fishing, hiking, riding, it's all done at Letchworth...but I enjoy the rides most. I want to be able to throw the other half on back, and cruise the park in the late afternoon sun while we take in the sights...and I DONT want to have to deal with backfires, pops, and breakdowns, dontcha know!!!

LOL...thanks for the advice, I take it ALL to heart and try anything that seems pertinent.

Hammerhead, you be in my old stompin grounds. Originally from Woodhull, lived in Lakeside, just a little south of Avon and love all the country roads around there and Letchworth Park too. The Penn Grand Canyon is really nice too. I really like riding around the finger lakes area too.

There's a Goldwing rider that commutes to my work and she has a cup holder on her bike. I haven't met her to ask, but I imagine that it would be possible to drink with the clutch hand at stoplights in neutral or while on the superslab. Of course they're not likely wearing a full face helmet. I take my clutch hand off all the time when I want to change my CD player.

On my ride up Mount Washington, I parked next to a Harley that had a cup holder mounted on the bars.
