Thanks Ken. I was having some trouble finding anything when searching the Internet for "Color Tune plugs"
Anyway I found 5 on e-bay at just over 50 bucks a pop and bough 4. The guy still has 1 for anyone that is interested and it is located in the USA.

Exactly Tod. Yes one would do but the best results are obtained when all involved cylinders are being viewed at the same time. This is why Colortune sells sets of up to 4 per set as well as individually. And i have decided that come hell or high water I WILL GET THIS ENGINE TUNED AND RUNNING PROPERLY if it's the last thing I do.

I have never even seen one but heard about them. Yes that is how they work. There is a glass ring around the base of the plug that allows you to see the color of the explosions happening in your cylinders. With these units there is no guess work about miss firing, rich cylinders or lean cylinders and anything else that's going on inside the engines combustion chamber at the point of ignition. i am hoping that with them I will finally be able to get this engine running the way it was meant to run.

Hmmm I bought a colortune and wasn't that impressed you have to remember every other spark fire is a wasted spark (it fires on the exhaust stroke also)...I found it better to do it by ear than by eye....my XS gets around 42 MPG consistently too.

                    Tuning by flame

                    Hi Rob,
that's nothing new but you don't need the fancy sparkplugs. Just take the headers off, wait until dark and fire her up. The tongues of flame from the exhaust ports should all be the same length and colour at all speeds if she's right.
Best you do this a LONG way out in the country.

                      Tuning

Oh yeah, and make sure you don't have any open containers of combustables!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"

The wasted spark thingee should not be an issue. There should be no gases in that cylinder when the wasted spark ocures so there would be no flame. I found some instructions on line and the manufacturer notes that it is best to use 4 at the same time on high performance engines like in motorcycles.
