Hello fellow XS people! I'm looking at an 82 XJ1100. 42,000 kms on the clock. Not running. Wiring trouble as the owner says his buddy tried to boost the bike's battery from a car battery and had the polarity reversed! I don't know how much of the electrics are fried, but owner says he bypassed the affected wiring and it ran fine after the incident. Says transmission is ok. Needs brake work. Oil is pitch black in the site glass. There's oil all over the front of the engine. Plug is gone from cam chain adj. The rest looks rough and neglected, but it's all there. I think he'll probably let it go for about $200. Wondering if I should take the leap. Might have potential, but lots of unknowns when buying a non runner. Not many parts from it will fit my 78E, so I'd have to try to get it back on the road. Comments?

You can pick up a complete wiring harness pretty cheap. PM andreashweiss and see if he has one. Also, I know one of the moderators has a wiring harness (John). I don't know if he will part with it, but it's worth asking.
I don't think much went wrong IF (Big "IF") it did indeed ran afterwards. A fuse may have been blown or something, but if it ran, then the electronics in the brain had to be working, along with the Regulator/Rectifier. If all else fails, you could consider it a parts bike as bad as I hate to say that since the engines are pretty similar. You could more than make that up selling the parts. I personally would jump on it.
TodTry your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.
You can live to be 100, as long as you give up everything that would make you want to live to be 100!

I would buy it, but remember....
The XJ is differnt in many ways from any of the XS models. Wiring harnes is unique, for example, as the XJ has the LCD display instead of the gauge cluster, oil level switch instead of an oil pressure switch, side stand and clutch lever interlocks so you can't ride away with the side stand down or start the bike in gear with the clutch engaged, and different alternator. Brakes are different, with the 'linked' system that operates the rear and front-left caliper from the foot brake lever. The calipers are different than any others used on with XS Standards or Specials.
A few parts with interchange from earlier XS models, transmission, wheels, brake rotors, clutch, cam chain and plug (the source of oil on the engine, most likely, is the missing plug) but other components, like the TCI box, won't.
If you buy it and plan to put it on the road you will need some patience and take the time to get the correct parts. it would be worth it to rescure this poor bike and put it back on the road, but it will take time, effort, and not a little money. Good Luck!Jerry Fields
