Yeah and what about BIG WATER? A bottle of water cost $1.29. What about big anything. Oil was about $35 per 25 years ago. Today it's not even twice that. Gasoline was $1.35 in 1981. I paid $3.15 today. It hasn't even doubled. Can you say that about anything else? In 1981 milk was about 95 cents a gallon. Today it's $3.09. My parents bought a new house in 1981. It was $40 per square foot. Today the same house would cost about $120 (in the same area of OK).

My point is everything goes up and gasoline today is not out of line with any other commodity at $3 or even $4 per gallon.

What is so frustrating about gasoline is the wide swings! One week it's $2.20...next week it's $3.15! Kat's link to hedging was quite informative.

There's still a lota people who live (not well) with out oil/gas/electricity. Think they would very much like to have our problems

This is an excellent point. And I suppose the term "live well" is relative. The Amish probably think they live better then we do.

When people say they MUST have gasoline that simply is not true. If the gas supplies dried up tommorrow would you just roll over and die.

No doubt life would be much harder but not impossible and the Amish have proven it. I read about 10 years ago where the average Amish 160 acre farm cleared $80,000 annually after taxes.

I am in no way saying we should revert to the 18th century. I certainly don't want to go back. But if push came to shove it can be done...not fun but ceratinly achievable.

rising oil prices drive the price of everything up. It is not the entire reason but it has quite a bit of influence. Milk for example may only be stored for a short period of time before it must be transported and refrigerated. How much electricity is required to refrigerate and process the milk? I have nothing to say about the rising price of water. Mostly I think it is just the fact that people are willing to pay for it.

We got more than the Saudis

Canada has 8 times more oil than the Saudis, that does not include whats off our East Coast....the oil that we have is just a little costlier to produce since its in the tar sands out west.

Could not be done with the population we have.
60/80 percent would have to go.
Most likely if gas disappeared tomorrow the killing would start with in a day or two. I would be one grumpy sob not being allowed to ride my XS.

Apart from my love of motorcycles, better fuel efficiency is one of the reasons I ride. I burn about a tank of fuel a week during the winter months, during the summer months, I burn 1.5 a week. the difference is that the 1.5 during the summer are in my XS...this week approx. 15 bucks a week. my regular vehicle is a full size pickup, I try not to drive alot but I haul stuff on a semi regular basis, so I have a full size truck, that and @ 6'03" and 240# I don't fit well into smaller vehicles. during the summer, I still drive my truck, but I can occaisionnaly get a month between fillups. besides, if I can have a blast riding my XS and save myself some cash by not filling my truck up once a week, all the better. by the way, I won't be buying fuel tomorrow, not because I feel the need to punish the "oil companies", but because I won't need fuel. my XS may not be as fuel efficient as some of the more modern machines, but it does all right for me. I guess if it was really that big an issue to me, I'd pull my 400cc kaw out of mothballs and ride it, it got close to 50mpg last time I rode it. I guess it comes down to a matter of choice, I have a vehicle that costs me twice as much to operate than some small economy car, it did five years ago, it does now. I have thought about getting something easier on fuel but, I can buy alot of gasoline for the price of a new or late model used vehicle payment. I guess that's all I got....hmmn, I guess that's more than enough, judas priest, I'm long winded. Have a nice day and ride safe.

The newspaper had an article that said gas would be at least $4 a gal later this summer. it also said that during last year's price hike, we had enough gas to fill a big void in our nations reserves.

In 2001 when I still lived in Mexico City gas was 35 pesos a litter. At the time (6 years ago) that was about $12.00 a gallon. Minimum wage in mexico was $5.00 a day. I wish gas was cheaper than it is, but I'm glad I can still afford it.

                              Like Carlin said!

Today (observing gas-out day) as I stood by the pump putting 26 gallons into my truck, George Carlin's solution to the whole problem popped into my mind.

Bush wants us to cut the amount of gas we use. The best way to stop using so much gas is to deport 11 million illegal immigrants! That would be 11 million less people using our gas. The price of gas would come down. Bring our troops home from Iraq to guard the border. When they catch an illegal immigrant crossing the border, hand him a canteen, rifle and some ammo and ship him to Iraq . Tell him if he wants to come to America then he must serve a tour in the military. Give him a soldier's pay while he's there and tax him on it. After his tour, he will be allowed to become a citizen since he defended this country. He will also be registered to be taxed and be a legal patriot. This option will probably deter llegal immigration and provide a solution for the troops in Iraq and the aliens trying to make a better life for themselves. If they refuse to serve, ship them to Iraq anyway, without the canteen, rifle or ammo. Problem solved.

                              George Carlin

So anybody else buy gas today??
