I don't know how many have heard but apparently there is a nation wide gas strike on May15. Supposedly no one is going to buy gas that day. I don't know what effect it will have on the oil companies because people will just buy gas before and after. It it was week long, that would make a real difference. Now we all ride motorcycles that get relatively good mileage but maby if you don't fill your car or whatever.

HobbyMan,
The only way to make an impact would be to not [COLOR=red]use any gas that day. That would mean eating home grown food (our food is trucked in every day) that day. Buy nothing from Wally World that day (also trucked in). All not imposable but pretty tough.Nubee

If the oil companies felt any loss of revenue from no one buying gas that day then they'd be compelled to raise the price of gas to recoup any losses.
As we have all seen, any slight hiccup cause the price to jump up but take monts to drift back down (not as low as before the 'event').
So, they know no one bought gas to punish them. This justifies them to jack the price 25 cents until everyone that boycotted that day pays the higher price.

I've recieved this one also, but I also got one that made some sense. It stated that the "One day gas strike" is pointless... but that if everyone made the two biggest ones suffer.. Exon/ Mobile and didn't buy any gas from them for a two week period, they would choke on their supplies. But I don't know the in's and out's of it. They probably supply all the little no-name stations too. And I also don't want to support that South American whacko President Fox and buy his stuff either. So who are we left with? Somebody more knowledgeable needs to answer.

Horses. Cheaper to own and maintain. OR nuke the middle east. Take their country, ( we took the USA ) ( most recently, from Mexico ) Now the oil belongs to us. Problem solved till we run out. Then we can find another country that's got oil, take it, and so on..S.R.Czekus

I do agree that one day would not be enough. If it was an all week affair, that would be interesting. What might happen is that if no one bought gas for a week, the surplus of gas would force them to drop prices because there would be no way to stop the flow of gas. Once the distribution tanks are full, there is no place to put the gas. They can't shut down refineries for a one week. That would cost the oil companies more than dropping the price of oil.United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY

I'm sure that those that know more than me about the subject can verify or deny it......
I heard that the total cost of fines and clean-up to Exxon for the Valdeze oil spill cost them about 13 hours of profits.
They charge so much for gas because you will pay it. Supply and demand. They have the supply and you want it. I remember people saying that if the price of a pack of cigarrettes got to a dollar they'd quit. How much are they now?Pat Kelly

It is very simple. Quit buying the stuff and the price will go down.
Here's the simple facts. At $3 per gallon it isn't high enough for most people to cut back. The price of gasoline today would have to reach $3.85 to equal what it cost in 1981 ($1.31) adjusted for inflation. I doubt it will get anywhere near that this year. And until it gets to that range people will not stop using it.
A recent poll indicated the price of gasoline would have to breach $4 before most American's would cut back.
Another thing you must consider...we are not the only people competing for this commodity. In 1981 it was primarily western Europe and the US that was competing for refined energy products. But today two huge enitities have entered the fray. China and India are burning fuel quantities by the Terex dump truck! It is estimated that within a decade China's consumption of oil will actually exceed that of "The Great Satan"...The USA.
So I suggest you stop hating Exxon/Mobile and write your congressman to tell him to "encourage" Exxon/Mobile to come back home and start exploring for domestic oil in our back yard.
This problem is not going away anytime soon. There is no "silver bullet" alternative that will replace conventional oil and gas. Nuclear could knock a huge dent in it but the EnvironMENTALS will never allow that to happen.
And Ethanol is a pipe dream people. The conversion factor is 1 gallon of Ethanol per bushel of corn. The USA burns a little over 500 million gallons of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel daily. Assume 300 million is gasoline alone. If we were blending E85 at that rate we'd have to harvest 255 million bushels of corn everyday of the week to have E85 replace conventional gasoline. Read it again...255 million bushels of corn EVERYDAY. Add to that the fact that it uses almost as much energy to produce ethanol as the ethanol it's self and ...well I think you see the obvious.
While E85 should certainly be a supplement in the overall problem...it is not only folly but irresponsible for government officials to lead the public down a primrose path of E85 utopia. Anyone with more than excrement for brains can figure this out. Sad truth is most of their constituents don't even have that much going for them.
The solution to our energy needs over the next few decades will be a huge challenge. The answer will lie in a multi-faceted attack consisting of:
1- Production of much more domestic conventional oil and gas
2- Implementation of proven energies that are not currently being utilized to their fullest...namely nuclear.
3- Development of emerging energies (fuel cells, ethanol, etc)
4- Last but not least - encourage conservation of energy in all areas. The only way to do this effectively is to "reward" people for conserving.
Sadly I fear the American public is so simple minded concerning this highly complex issue that most believe there is a "silver bullet" energy...an energy that will simply and totally replace what we are currently using.
If only life were that simple...Last edited by MAXIMAN; 05-07-2007, 09:39 PM.

Rising gas prices are inevitable. The price of everything is going up. Like you say, there is not silver bullet. But why have the gas prices skyrocketed in the past few years with oil companies making record profits? If you stop buying gas before companies have time to send oil elsewhere, they will be forced to lower prices. Too much supply and not enough demand. If you remember earlier last year, there was a big gasoline conservation effort going on. Many reports came in that all of our gasoline reserves filled up and prices soon dropped. Right now without a variety of alternative fuel sources, that is about our only tool to keep fuel companies in check. I could go on for hours about ethanol. What a load of bull. It is costing the country more money than it is "saving." Have you checked the price of animal feed lately? MY welding instructor owns a ranch out in west Texas. He is going to loose it in a few years because the price of feed has more than tripled since they started producing ethanol from corn. It was strictly a political deal. I was reading some articles in the paper on some studies how ethanol with gasoline is increasing the chances of cancer in many people. It did not go into a lot of detail but they are seeing an uprising problem related to ethanol gasoline. Viewing the matter from an energy standpoint, it consumes more energy to produce the ethanol from corn than than you get from the end product. If they used the resources that are being put into the corn fields of Iowa and surrounding areas, they could be already marketing electric cars. MY uncle lives in a small town that now stricty produces geneticaly engineered corn for ethanol. They are putting up ethanol plants all of the time. Not to mention the manufacturing plants around my uncle's place smell horrible. There are few if any upsides to using ethanol. The only solution is to model after European countries that have mass transit. That is the only solution. I am not talking busses that run on natural gas. I mean high speed electric trains. People in the United States are too greedy to ride trains because they want to sit in their gas guzzling car driving down the road only caring for me and mine.United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY
