A federal sales tax would work for me, but what about a flat tax? 18% tax after the first $40K. The numbers work out. I agree wholeheartedly that the tax code is the blunt object that the government bludgeons the public and businesses with. With due respect to Maximan, the giant loophole thing is a myth. The top 1% of US taxpayers paid 37% of all US taxes. The numbers are readily available online at the IRS. In NY, the top 1% paid 22% of all taxes. But I digress. How about all the other taxes people pay? The fees on your utility and phone bills. Vehicle registrations and inspections. Sales tax. Dog licenses. It goes on and on and on. I pay $500 a month in property and school tax. And I still have to pay for water, sewer, garbage disposal, etc. I'm rugrat free by choice. Where's the tax cut, because I'm not receiving a whole lot of benefits there! Every gallon of gas I buy has a total of 48 cents of federal and state taxes. Any idea why it is ILLEGAL to post the tax on gasoline at the pump? Riots, maybe? I'm going to clean my Barrett 82 now. It makes me feel better:

You get no argument from me. I am fully aware of the fact that the top few percent pay the overwhelming majority of taxes. taht is a fact.

However it is also a fact that some of the uber wealthy don't pay such taxes (ie Teresa Kerry reported 7% recently).

My only point is there are loop holes period. These loopholes can be leveraged to llow some people to pay very little while others get stuck regadless of income level.

The Fair Tax would eliminate this disparity.

      Fredintoon -

We are not "poor boobs"... the entire premise of the Fair Tax is that the income tax would be eliminated in lieu of the prescribed sales tax. Obviously if it weren't then no one would be in favor of yet another tax.

But if the income tax were eliminated and replaced with a sales tax that would be a much better solution than the Draconian tax laws we now serve. Don't you agree?

Please don't say "Do you poor boobs actually think the government will eliminate the income tax?" Of couse we think that. Elimination of the inome tax is predicated via implementation of the Fair Tax. To think otherwise would be folly.

I also would like to see something done with the current tax code. I am absolutely fed up and sick and tired of being told that I'm sick and tired of beig sick and tired, I'm certainly not and I'm sick and tired of being told that I am! but seriously folks, the only way this pipe dream is going to happen is when all those expletives who cry "how are we going to pay for all these tax cuts!?" are run out of office. I don't remember anyone asking how I was going to pay for "those tax increases" that I was dealt in the late 80's and the 90's. These people by and large (yes I know there are exceptions to my blanket statement) couldn't tell you how much a gallon of milk is much less give a rats rear about whether or not you or I can actually afford their taxes. I hope I am mistaken and that our overbearing tax code is eventually overhauled or even dismantled, but I fear there will be a second american revolution before that happens. I guess I kinda busted out the old soap box on that one didn't I? sorry, didn't mean to rant and ramble on that long folks, have a nice day and ride safe .

mebbeso, I read it was really about the North needing tariffs to protect US industry from offshore competition vs the South needing free trade to sell cotton & tobacco on the world market. But what ordinary joe is going to join the army & get shot over a thing that? Let's say it's to free the slaves instead.

Yes, I suppose it could be refered to in that context. However, I personally have always viewed the civil war as more of a squashed rebellion...yea, I know, same thing...ok! curse it! a third American revolution! , That's all I got, have a nice day and ride safe. even though it is raining here
