Tax season is in at my house. 2003 is the first year our family has had to pay AMT(alternative minimum tax.) I helped my Dad find receipts and stuff. I watched as our tax deductions went up and SO did amt. No matter how much money is donated or put towards educational expenses, the refund remains the same. What was all this BS about tax breaks? I understand the basics about doing taxes and it seems as though our gov't is communist. You can't deduct this, we tax that, ITS ALL BS! I understand that we have a responsibility to fund the gov't, but we don't have a responsibility to fund an institution centered around frivolous spending. Does anyone want to share some elightenment on this subject? Maby there is someone on this site that works for the IRS? I will certainly be writing a letter about this.

    Man Oh Man...

I can sense Maximan flexing his fingers already!! It seems to me that we had a war not too aweful many years ago from greedy people who taxed us too highly. We sent them back home... but what do you do to the ones that live with you?

I don't see any other way out of it. How can you have honest people spending millions of dollars to get elected to a job that pays in the tens of thousands.. or slightly into the hundred? Why would anyone do that if they KNEW that the only money they were going to get was their paycheck? Because they know it's not.

We couldn't have a Boston Tea Party now though. The EPA would get you for poluting the bay.. PETA would sue you for killing a few fish, and Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be screaming that everyone was prejudice because they used "Black" tea leaves.

We have let them take more and more.. just a little at a time. It would seem to me.. that if they would just do away with the IRS (Can you imagine how much money that would save alone?)... get rid of all the tax rules and confusion.. just tax everyone an equal percentage. With the population growing every year, and more people entering the job market, each year the work force grows, the money does for the government, and they shouldn't have to raise any new taxes. They should learn to deal with the money they have just like everybody else has to. You want that extra special new Air Force jet... or space shuttle?? Save like everyone else has to! You forsee the workforce shrinking as baby boomers retire?? SAVE!! If you know it's coming... quit spending every frikkin penny you have on crap now.. wondering what's going to happen when that time gets here. Like we need millions going to someone to do a study to figure out why the buttered side of the bread always falls down... WHO FRIKKIN CARES??

Anyone else wanna borrow my soap box?

Your are indeed right Mr. Tod.

The answer is simple DESTROY the income tax and replace it with a federal sales tax.

Read it for yourself: Fair Tax

I have studied this thoroughly and it will work. It will actually increase federal revenues and will cut out the absurd tax breaks the uber rich get. Many of the utlra wealthly actually only pay 7 or 8 % while you and I are paying a much higher rate.

The fair tax would tax everyone at the point of consumption. Wealthly people would pay the same rate everyone else does. And the very poor wouldn't pay any tax. They would recieve a "rebate" for the taxes they pay for basic nessecities once they show their income falls below the minimum level.

Another way it would benefit is it will tax the "black market" economy. As it is ... for instance ...drug dealers don't report income and pay no income tax. However those druggies certianly spend their money just like everyone else. The fair tax would rectify this disparity.

Illegal Aliens would pay taxes too...since they spend money here as well.

Just read it and look into it with an open mind. Personally I'm all for it. 20+ Schools of Economics have studied this plan and say it will work.

Another thing is this plan has bi-partisan support. Many Democrats and Republicans support it.

Some don't as usual because it doesn't gvie them vote buying power. They can't promise bogus "tax cuts" to garner votes and they are fighting this plan tooth and nail. That fact alone should give you pause to think.

Something must be done to overhaul our current tax system. The code is sooooo complicated now that even the IRS doesn't understand it. The elimination of all the paper work and filing alone would save the government billions in time.

Just check it out. I'm not asking you to embrace this idea ... just educate yurselves to it. I think if yu read it completely and rationally you'll agree. The Fair Tax is a good plan. There are more benefits than I could ssibly address here in this forum so please go research it for yourself.

      I love Maxes...I hate taxes...

Tax laws are the politicians second most powerful tool.
Used to gain them everything from "under the table cash ", sweat heart jobs after there out of office, donations to there campaigns, contracts for "friends/family" and a host of other legal larceny.
Got a big laugh when Bush made an announcement that he wanted to simplify the tax code.
        Flat out lie.
He knows that it will never happen. Politicians will never give up such power and money.

They are so greedy that even though they make the rules/laws several each year get caught with there hand in the cookie jar. I believe 99 percent of politicians "crimes" are never discovered/reported. Taxing/spending “authority” spans from the feds all the way down to junior wannabe politicians at your local school district.

Exactly. However if the people catch onto this one it can be done. I have urged my congressman and Senators to support this. I have also told them if they don't I will do everything within my power to get them replaced. That means not only voting against them but informing all my friends and family to do same. However many of the OK congresional types are in favor of this plan. So it's not a problem here yet.

Democrats should love this plan since it alleviates all tax burden on the poor...something I totally agree with. Republicans should love it because it does away with the bogus income based tax and wipes out a huge layer of beauracracy.

Well...with that attitude it will never change. I refuse to take that attitude. Something has to change soon...or this issue will utlimately result in a civil uprising in the future OR worse. I don't think any of us want that.

The IRS rapes the single man. Me personally, I've paid less taxes the last 2 years in a row. I'll happily take whatever I can get (back) until the highly unlikely day the tax code changes.

Both the wealthy and the poor benefit under out current tax code. The middle gets screwed as usual. Tax cuts are a selling point to the rich, and all the credits in the system have gone a long way towards being just another entitlement. Tell the weeping masses that they wont be getting their free EIC money and see how they react....

I have read up on the federal sales tax, and I kinda like it too. Doubt it has a snowball's chance in hell of passing, but one can hope.

                  Most excelant idea.
Also instead of payroll deductions you should have to write a check pay quarterly too.

Another excellent idea. People are clueless when it comes to taxes. If this was implemented I think it would make more people realize what is actually happening.

I have actually heard people say "I didn't pay any taxes this year...I GOT MONEY BACK!"

                      You REALLY want an FST?

Us Canadians got one. GST they call it, Gouge'n'Screw Tax is what the initials really mean. Do you poor boobs actually suppose an FST will replace the income tax rather than simply be laminated on top of it?. You really want to improve government revenues, legalise all dope and tax it, not just alcohol & tobacco. That'll free up half the guys in jail to seek honest work as hydroponics experts and pay off the national debt in maybe 5 years. Admittedly it will be an interesting 5 years.

                        To the highest bidder....

What can you expect from a government whose officials are not elected, but get the job because they have the most money to spend on the campaign. I think they all should get equal amounts, equal air time and see who does the best with what they are alloted. Those kind of politicians would be more inclined to not overspend.

I like the Federal Sales Tax idea. I figure it would work and put lots of IRS ideots in Washington out of work at the same time.

100% correct - that's how it worked in the USofA until the Feds starting enforcing the 16th amendment

Not that I don't wholly support downsizing the enormous gov through more practical approaches like eliminating th eIRS, but I think someone should say something good and I volunteer. I am super poor (household total $8k last year). My wife and I go to college full time and the majority of that income was working during the summer. We also have a 2 year old. You can't live too much cheaper than we do. Total, we payed in under a grand in taxes, yet we are getting back around $2.5k. It helps a lot. I am very thankful. I still hate paying taxes though.
