  • Literary Corner - it's been awhile

    The bikes are finally running
the best they have in years
It's not all milk and honey...
Could bring you right to tears

    Everytime it happens
    you can surely bet
the rain will start to slappin
and we surely will get wet

    Those stinging little drops
are just like fine tipped pins
    and when it finally stops
    a bike is down again

(Okay... moderately on the pessimistic side... but sheesh! finally get the bikes going really well and it rains...
Not that I'm griping... we need the rain... but still...)

      Wildkat sounds like me
      This crazy fickle bike.
      Somethings always going wrong
      or breaking or the like.

For some reason I keep fixing it
And bringing her back to life.
You'd think she would be more thankful
      But instead only more strife.

That's why I ride it in the rain
      Or at any other time
Even when it hurts a bit
like Kat stated in her rhyme.

I know it soon will break again
And out will come the wrench
I'll cuss it like a sailor does
      The ungratefull f***ing wench!

I'll fix her, patch her, seal her up
And lavish her with my care.
Push the button, start it up
And pray she gets me there.

I don't decide the days to ride
      She's clearly let me know
That she's the one to decide
      Whether we stop or go.

      It's clearly a one-sided relationship
I can't explain why it is I stay
I guess it's because the times are so good
On the days that she lets me play.

She bobs and weaves like Muhammad Ali
Cutting the wind like a knife
Begging me to twist it more
Speed limits? Not in this life!

I take her home and put her to bed
And think of her in my dreams
Of the wind in face, the sights, the smells
      Like flying sometimes it seems

Tomorrow I'll go to wake her up
      I'm starstruck...her biggest fan.
I think of the places we'll see today
But the wench has a different plan.

Out comes the wrench, the Yamabond
That ride will have to wait
I'll fix her, patch her, seal her up
      Alas.... this is my fate.

              "Sorry I'm late..."

WildKAt once again shows her insightful nature.
TRBIG's writing often makes me cry, too, Poprock. (Though usually due to his spelling and grammar)

Poetry... one of the noblest forms of human expression. Conveying abstract thought through words, each carefully chosen for meaning and intent.
(Both poems served their function... allowing one to visualize or live an experience without actually being there)
Is it time for another Haiku contest?

              Dripping from her pores,
She's sweaty from a hard ride.
              Oil spots on the floor.

(See, that was something that we all could see in our mind's eye. Now to visualize with our mind's nose...)

              I worked late again.
              House seems different some how.
              Dogs inside all day.

                Moist, smooth, glistening
                Breathless anticipation
                Ketchup slow again

(yeah... like I was really going to go there)

(we're going to have to do this more often... I'm forgetting the rules... other than the 5-7-5)

Is it time for another Haiku contest?

                    Excerpted from Wikepedia:
                    Contemporary English-language haiku
While traditional hokku focused on nature and the place of humans in nature, modern haiku poets often consider any subject matter suitable, whether related to nature, an urban setting, or even a technological context. While old hokku avoided some topics such as romance, sex, and overt violence, contemporary haiku often deals specifically with such themes.

Traditional hokku required a long period of learning and maturing, but contemporary haiku is often regarded as an "instant" form of brief verse that can be written by anyone from schoolchildren to professionals. Though conservative writers of modern haiku stay faithful to the standards of old hokku, many contemporary writers have dropped such standards, emphasizing personal freedom and pursuing ongoing exploration in both form and subject matter.

Due to the various views and practices today, it is impossible to single out any current style or format or subject matter as definitive "haiku". Nonetheless, some of the more common practices in English are:

Use of three (or fewer) lines of no more than 17 syllables in total.
Keyword: syllables, not just words for folks wanting to try!
                    T.C.

What I did yesterday, in haiku of course!:

                    Mold encrusted deck,
                    power washed for seven hours,
                    beautiful wood grain.

                    79SF "The Teacher" . . .basket case!
                    History shows again and again,
How nature points out the folly of men!

                      "Angry, now..."

WildKat... that was really unfair. Just when I started to like it.... you ruined it for me.
                      So...

                      My hands around your neck,
                      squeezing, slapping your bottom.
                      Blood flows from your mouth.

Uhmmm... we were still talking about ketchup, right?

                        It's one o' clock now.

                          I'm beginning to wonder...

                          Hard, held in my grasp
                          Satisfaction in moist jets
                          Pulsating mustard

Since we seem to be on the subject of condiments...
It's becoming very difficult to keep this clean...
                          (Mustard stains SO badly)

Thanks T. C.! I actually found the same write up on another site... but was looking more at the strict, traditional rules that go with Haiku...
They can be a bit contradictory at times...

I don't know Tod... I can think of a few things... but I'm being nice... No... really...
                          See?

                          I'm smiling...
