i think we talked about that here recently, i surmize they talk about that too on their forums, but to different affect, i can't tell if they are metric bikes , so maybe all crusier don't wave, they are trying to ride for chris sakes...

I just went for a quick 30 mile jaunt. Every bike I passed waved, Harley or other, country or city. Everyone waved. I waved back.
I usually do wave but sometimes it gets annoying after awhile. Sometimes I just want to ride and don't feel like personally acknowledging each and every motorcycle I happen to pass. Like dogs sniffing each others butt. It dosen't hurt my feeling if the other dosen't wave whether returnig or initiating the wave.

Yeah, but I'd get offended if someone didn't have the courtesy to sniff back.

                  Waving or sniffing

My pops had the following answer as to why dogs always sniff one another butts.

Back in the early history of earth before mankind came to rule the land dogs were the dominant species. They were very aristocratic society and often had large formal events. At one such event all the dogs in the land had gathered for an evening of socializing and entertainment. As is common practice in modern time for Humans to check their coats at black tie affairs dogs to out of proper etiquite would check their tails at the door. Apparently at this one event a terrible fire errupted and all the dogs had to flee at once. There was mass pandemonium in the tail room and many dogs wound up with the wrong tail. So it become common place when one dog met another to check and see if they could find there tail. It just evolved through history as a normal thing to do. So that kids is why you see dogs sniffing around one anothers hind ends. They are not just sniffing the butt, but are just trying to find the right tail.

About dogs and the way they sniff at each other, don't it make you glad that people invented the handshake?

i think that harley riders must b universal,
they never wave back here either,
actually the other day i was given the finger by one of them,
he was wearing colours and travelling in opposite direction along the freeway, cause i was riding a jap bike.
i always have the last laugh tho, there the ones left behind at the lights, that pisses em off more than anything.

                        A few observations:

Not all metric bike oners wave back.
More riders - all types - wave back on the road than around town.
Harley riders in groups hardly ever wave. If one does it generally will be the first or last rider in the group.
Individual Harley riders on the road frequently wave back, but almost never wave first.
If you've ridden a V-Twin at 75 mph you would know why it takes an experienced rider to take one hand off the bars to wave. Most Harley riders don't put enough miles on their bikes to develope this confidence. Those that do will wave back, at least on occasion.
I remember driving my Austin-Healy Sprite in the late '60s, all import owners tended to wave or honk when they passed each other. Honking came to mean two things: sportiness and foriegn origin. Waving is a derivative of those times, and if its two things Harleys are not known for, it is sportiness and foriegn origin.
Early spring - late fall riders wave most consistently.
A fair number of pillion passengers will wave. Once in a while you will get a double-wave, pilot and passenger. When that happens, the passenger is usually female and the bike is a Gold Wing.
Waving at kids in cars (or busses) will generally get you some high-5's. (Does not work with newer cars with tinted windows.)

Anyway, I like waving and getting a wave back in return, but if it doesn't happen I'll just wait for the next opportunity.
