favorite road

I suspect that most of us have a few favorite roads. You know, the ones you you head for when you have a few hours of riding time and want to get out of town. Maybe these are the ones you ride when you have guests around. In any event, here are a few of my favorite western Colorado roads; I ride these several times a year.


Back way into Moab, Utah along the Colorado River basin.


McClure Pass along the Crystal River south of Carbondale, Colorado.


Red Mountain pass between Telluride and Silverton, Colorado.

So, what are your favorite roads?

Some of my favorite roads are in Death Valley. I spent a weekend there with a Navy buddy of mine, who had gotten a job there at Furnace Creek ranch after his discharge in the 1980. He had a 750 Honda, and he let me take it out for a day. Some of the roads were straight as an arrow, others looked like they painted a snakes belly, and the road followed the piant marks. Even though it is a desert, there was some beautiful scenery. I tell everyone I know who says they are going to Vegas, to check out Death Valley. In season of course.

Here in Santa Cruz, We have California Highway 1, and highway 9. Eliberty and I will be riding them Sunday.
When we have time, a trip down 1 to Big Sur is a great ride. Just look at a LOT of the car ads....

The 3 roads leading to Mt Hamilton (Lick Observatory). Del Puerto Cyn Rd; Mines Rd; and Alum Rock Rd. All between San Jose, Livermore, and Modesto CA.
Most any road in the Sierra Nevadas except they usualy have too much auto traffic.

California Hwy 1 for me too

except at night when the fog starts moving in...
but definitely some of the prettiest roads I've seen...

It's been a while since I've been that way... but as I recall, the Blue Ridge Parkway was quite beautiful as well...

Mmmm... twisties!

US-41 and M-26 by Copper Harbor, MI.

Both full of twisties. US-41 is also called the "tunnel of trees road" for good reason. AWESOME when the fall colors are out!! 11' lanes, no shoulder, and trees right there -makes it feel like you're flying.

M-26 is even twistier than 41, with ups and downs and tight lefts and rights all thrown together in different combinations of what can only be described as sheer motorcyclists' ectasy! All this with beautiful Lake Superior to one side. I'd even say it'd give the Dragon down in NC/TN a run for its money. My heart's beating fast just describing it.

Man, I can't wait for spring to get here!!

The one drawback (if you can call it that) to Mt Hamilton is that it is so twisty that your speed isn't that high. I really don't consider this a bad thing personally.
South Mountain Park in Phoenix, AZ is/was awesome (haven't been there in 25 years). I especially liked the backside that was so twisty you could see your own taillight, perfect for my 400 Honda.
