    "If I may..."

Over 100,000 French died in the Resistance
I had just read a good estimate a few months ago, but I don't believe the number was that high. Contrary to what Hollywood romantically wants you to believe, the resistance wasn't all that successful, nor appreciated by the general French population. Successful in the general distruction and chaos they caused, and this is not to say that they weren't a thorn in everybody's side, but not too much wide spread effect was had, mostly local disturbances.
The French population hated the resistance, as it caused reprisals from the Germans. (under international law, resistance movements in occupied zones are illegal, and reprisal methods and such are lawful. Check your copy of the Hague and Geneva conventions. Also, "The Rules of Land Warfare" is a good source.)
Under the armistice treaty, the french also were able to retain a standing army of 100,000 and their whole fleet, which as I mentioned, was either confined in foriegn ports when France surrended, or where sunk by the British, which really riled the Frenchies.
But explain why the French ROARED WITH CHEERS when we liberated Paris...
France was content to sit out the rest of the war, and wanted no English nor American involvement in their affairs. Any French involvement would have meant economic loss. The wouldn't let the Germans have air bases in the middle east, as the resulting conflict with the allies there would have meant the take over(either German or Allied) of french colonies in that area. Same goes for the Northen African colonies, Algeria, and such.
Early plans called for the shipment of jews from Germany, and occupied Europe, to Madagascar (a french colony or protectorate), but the French vetoed that, as well. (of course, it's also well known that the British wouldn't allow jewish immigration to Palastine, either, and actually fired on several ships of refugees trying to land there. But this is off topic)
France, though occupied, still had most of it's rights as a nation, and the Germans couldn't demand, but rather, had to ask for most of what they wanted form her. Germany occupied most of the north, and the coast, as a defensive measure, but the french government, in Vichy, still governed the whole show.
You may be surprised to learn that it was the French police, not the Germans, that did most of the rounding up of partisan groups.
    As far as economics...
France was struggling with economic chaos ever since the first war ended. Riots, food shortages, mutinies in the army during the second world war were common place. After the occupation, the shortage of food stuff and imported goods, cause by the Allied blockade of the coast caused a lot of concern. Remember, an occupying force must also concern itself with the welfare of the occupied. "Can't have civil unrest"
Germany brought in more cattle and foodstuffs for the French population than they took out. (same went for the Ukraine... who welcomed the German 'invaders" with open arms, and open mouths, after Stalin's "Collectivization" plan starved what has been estimated at 20,000,000 to death)
As far as employment in France was concerned(which also meant earning money to eat) many were unemployed and many willingly went to Germany for work, as did Belgians, etc.
If I may refer you to the testimony of Ernst Sauckel( head of manpower and bigwig at the Reich Ministry of Labor) against the charge of Slave Labor during the Nuremberg trials. His testimony and documentation gives a good view of the conditions in France at the time, and how the imported laborers were fed, paid, and treated better than the German population as a whole.
Testimony of Ernst Friedrich Christoph Sauckel

Sure... to try to answer the posed question...
After the Mexicans take over the U.S., and the Canadians come down to help us throw them out, we will 'cheer' the Canadians, too. The we will also cheer when they leave. (which they may not, as was the French fear concerning the Brits and the Americans)

Much media play in Iraq... huge crowds when they toppled that statue of Saddam. Of course, a few days later when we saw a photo of the event, taken from the top of a hotel looking downward, we saw that the Cheering Throng of Thousands consisted of only twenty or thirty people. The ol' huddle everyone together and get the camera really close" trick.

No country, with any sense of nationalism, cares to be occupied. What people care about is whether they are employed and can feed their families.
It was the Germans that killed the French soldiers. It was the Americans and the English that leveled the French cities.

      Back to the original topic

I know this is gonna pi$$ off many of you, and I have been witholding my comments for some time now, but I feel I need to speak out. Some years ago, WK and I went to a concert in Dallas where nugent was one of the opening acts. I wasn't a big fan of his, but I liked some of his music. Well, during the show, all he did between songs was blast the $hit out of Bill Clinton, and Janet Reno, and the rest of the government. I know he is entitled to his opinion (y'all know what they say about opinions), as are the rest of you, but he had a captive audience, and I didn't want to hear that crap. I went to hear music, not some draft dodging, pants s#itting, teenage girl boinker (does anyone know about that fact?)spewing forth his brand of garbage. Many people in the crowd were booing him. If I hadn't wanted to see the headlining act, REO Speedwagon,I would have left there and then, but as I paid good money, I wasn't going to miss the real reason why I was there. I have seen his TV show, and I got the impression that he took great pleasure in intimidating, and belittling the contestants on it. He seemed just a little to close to being borderline crazy. It may have been an act, but it sure seemed like an extension of the man that I saw on stage that night. I have a few of his albums, but I haven't played any of them since. Anybody want 'em?

Ok, I had my say, flame away. Remember, this is a motorcycle forum, not a political soap box. If you feel you must vent your political opinions, take them to some place that is intended for them.

        "Quite true, John"

I whole-heartedly agree, which is hard for me as I'm generally cold and heart-less.
Be that as it may, this is a general forum... for posts general, obscure and sundry.
Opinions are fine, actually welcome, as by hearing other opinions, one may learn more about, or self-correct, the views that one himself holds.
Obviously, heated debates, name calling and the tossing about of insults and such should not be done in the forum.
Use the PM system, as I do, when you wish to call someone a low-grade moron. It's much more personal.

I can agree with the fact that I would not want to hear his political rants after having paid good money to hear him play. SHUT UP AND SING!

However I have no use for Bill CLinton NOR Janet "BULL" Reno. What happened at Waco, Texas was a joke and could have been completely averted.

          But that's another thread altogether.

One more thing whilst we're on it. When the site is update ...hopefully soon...there should be a section for politics/religion/rants. It should have no limits on what is said or expressed.

We have one at the ZXR website and it is quite entertaining to enter this area of "fray".

I suggest we have something similar here.

            Just my dimes worth.

"And by a show of hands..."

Politics, by it's very nature, is one group against another, neither side's opinion based wholely, less often partially, on truth or fact.
Debates of a political nature usually get heated and tempers flare, as their only foundations are emotionally based.
And to further cause disharmony... you wish to throw religion into the mix? Yeah, like that's a real factual based philosophy!
Suppose I call your political favorite a "snake in the grass"? Not only have I then offended you politically, but maybe also T.C., as his religion might be "Appalachian Snake Handler".
Hostilities would soon move from that forum and infect the other ones.
There are also several "Men of the Cloth" here as members..., so this may not really be a wise move.

I think it was Louis XIV that stated,"The more you stir a turd, the more it stinks." And look at the stink stirred up by this discussion of an incontinent rockstar!

No... I think politics and religious discussion and debate have no place here. This site would get real unfriendly.

I don't find this very amusing, and I would like to see an apology, or an explaination for that post when I get home from work this afternoon. I haven't attacked anybody personally, and I don't plan on doing so. I may think that the Current Occupant is nothing more than a stupid, blundering Ahole, who is so deep into the corporate pocket that here couldn't get out with a crane, but I don't go around here on the forum shouting it out at anyone that can hear me. But if this site is redesigned, maybe there will be a political forum, like the ZXR site has, but till then lets keep it semi friendly, and if you feel the need to rant, do it there.

                      Wow

and just how inappropriate is that one?

Our family almost lost John to an accident last year... and no matter what context that post was meant to be taken in Cody... it was still very upsetting to see my husband's name with two weapons firing at it...

Sensitive? Maybe... but after last year... I have a right to be...

I wholeheartedly agree. I belong to several dozen online discussion groups and the result is always the same. Some people thrive on argument...to the point where they won't be satisfied by confining it to any one area. The ones with the strongest opinions invariably spill it into the other forums, ruining the site for those that really couldn't give a s**t either way. I've left more boards than I can count for that very reason.

I think you leaving the site would be a tremendous loss and a little extreme... You are obviously very knowledgeable on the subject of bikes as well as many other things... Your insight and advice have been priceless to many.

and I do have a sense of humor... just not on this one... I'm not big on guns... I don't have a problem with people having them... I just don't prefer to own one myself... my choice... but even the suggestion that one be pointed at a loved one makes me cringe... so no... I don't have a sense of humor where that is concerned...

not all of my jokes go over well either... but I accept the fact that my sense of humor is a little off the wall to some people... just as yours might be construed to be at times...
