  • Thanks Nashville_bill!!!

I spend the day at Bill's house cleaning out carbs, changing oil and generally fixing up my bike. Well, actually Bill did most of it but I learned for next time.

Just wanted to thank him here since this is where he first offered to help.

The big thing was that previously my bike wouldn't idle without leaving the choke out. Now it idles fine once it gets started up.

On the way home it was surging, but I figured that was probably air in the gas line. Before I go out again I'm going to double check the hoses to be sure there's not a leak in the air lines as well.

In the process of cleaning the carbs we found out a previous owner had broken off one of the needle valves so the #3 carb isn't idling. While putting it back together one of the jets broke and we didn't have another #10 so we used a #15 which, as I understand it, will cause it to run a little rich. I'm planning on looking on eBay for a new #3 carb (or a whole rack possibly) and need to figure out where to buy another #10 jet.

Gaines - It was a pleasure to meet you yesterday. I hope we were able to help your XS. If you find gas in your air filter again, take the air filter off (the lower part that actually has the filter element in it) and find out which carb is "passing gas". Sorry, I couldn't resist the pun. When you get your new carb body, you can check out the float in that carb to make sure the float isn't draging on the bowl gasket or something else. Also, you might want to look for some replacement petcocks because the left one has the tube that came out and the right one has a leak when in the off position. Let me know if I can help you with anything.

Lots of things can cause surges. On Kong it was kinked fuel lines. Ran great, got low on fuel and sputtered. I unkinked the lines and no more problems. BTW, if you can find Tygon fuel lines, they are "fix and forget". 3/16 ID Tygon will stretch over your fittings and needs no clamps to stay put.

High was 21 this morning, most of day was 15. It's now 10 and heading south. I was in my unheated garage getting things ready to start second gear fix as soon as I get all the documetation ready. Damned cold, gonna to move the space heaters out there!

As a retired firefighter, I'm pretty careful about that. I use an Electric radiation heater and I have an outlet wired to the light switch so it's only on when I am in there.

I also have most of my chemicals stored in the shed, rather than the garage. I still have some, but I have those in a cabinet at the far end of the garage from the heater.

Hey there Gaines, don't overlook the possibilty that the vent in the gas cap is blocked, check the easy stuff first.
